What is the difference on a LP starter?

I have a factory 400 LP tractor and the starter drive is bad. Case/IH sayes that the drive is longer available thru them. I was also at a starter/altenator repair shop and they gave me the same information as well. Does anyone know where I might get a starter drive for this tractor? What is the difference from the regular starter for a gas tractor besides the fact of being 12 volt? What 12volt starter could I replace it with to work on this tractor? Would a starter off of a deisel tractor work? Thanks Hal

LP on 400 was 12 volt all rest exept diesel 6. Is yours like gas with regular seloniod on top
but noticably longer? Or does it have seloniod that mechanicly operates drive gear.IH quit furnising first type and replaced them with later type.Don't know if you can get parts for it either.

Farmallkid don't know about the drive but many LP's had little bigger starters to give them a little torque.

Now i am not 100% on this but we use to use that starter whenever we did a change over from 6 to 12 volt and i can not remember if there was a differance on the bendix as all 400 lp gasser where 12 volt but like i said i am not 100% sure but i am thinking that the bendix is the same on both , get one for a gasser and try it what do you have to lose.

I have no experience with LP but I cannot possibly imagine there is any difference from the gas or the LP. Try this, remove the starter drive from your starter, take it with you to the dealer, and ask the parts man to show you a starter drive for a gas model 400. Then compare the two. I could be wrong but I think you will find that there is no differance.
It is possible the parts person does not have a listing for the 400 LP, that is why he says he doesn't have one.

Hi 'Kid, I sure couldn't imagine any difference. I have a 400LP and when I got it, it turned over very slow. Luckily I got a few parts with it and one of them was a starter. I changed it out and it cured my problem. My point is that in my research I found that the only diffences were in the intake system. I guess that we have desirable heads too. Higher compression. I hope this helps some.
