Going to look at and bid on a 766 man said the hyd. pump is out of it . He said you can crank it up and it wpuld take 45min to build hyd. pressure when it was cold outside then he said it wouldn"t take as long when it was warm outside. To me this sounds backwards from a bad pump , but what could it be ? Also how much would this thing be worth the paper said poor condtion . Thanks Joe

i think i would give it some serious consideration.....especially if it can be had cheap! what's the serial #? is it a black stripe? i bought mine cause it was way to dang cheap and it has turned out to be the best darn tractor i have right now. i have a easy shot at an 886 w/ a nice cab right now but i don't want to give the ole 766 up. NO ALLEN I CAN'T HAVE BOTH!!! i'd give my 706 gasser up in a heartbeat but i can't get enough for it?!?!?!? just get it and worry bout the problems later, all you end up with in the end is a better tractor then you started with.

I agree on the hydraulic issue, moisture in the oil causing it to be thick when cold, also causing an iced up filter, all of which starves the pump. The pump might not be junk yet, but it will be very soon. Don't give much for it. A 30 year old tractor in poor shape, no matter what brand, is bound to have some major issues. Might look fine now, but put it under a full load, and things will show up. If you don't have time to fix the big problems yourself, just think what it will cost to have the Case-IH dealer get it fixed up.

Hi Joe,

Boy, I dunno. I've looked at some really ragged-eared 766s in the past year and have been disappointed in them all.

If it is a diesel, maybe $2500? If its a gasser, I'd leave the thing set, cause you can't pour gasoline in 'em fast enough.

Just my opinion,

Allan

Heck Joe,

If it is a diesel and isn't in too bad of shape, I'd grab it. All depends on the hours, I guess.

The bad part about a 766 is it's size. Guys like to mount those front-hang loaders on 'em and you know what those things do to a tractor. Look hard at that front end.

If this one has been used for field work tho, you might have a gem in the rough, who knows? I think the hydraulic issue is the least of your worries; you can always throw a filter or pump in the old sister.

That would be ok and you will probably find the reason for the slow hdy. is that it has junk for hdy. oil and that the filter is so pluged that it is a wounder that anything works , don't know why but for some reason the neighbor 766 draws water or moisture big time we have tryed everthing on his even installed two breathers to help vent the trans and rearend .

And the gasser's horsepower is rated using shetland ponies.

well that is not quite true they will still go out and pull 4x16's all day long or drag a 13 foot disc faster then you want to go across plowed ground . the biggest problem is that the are a nice big littel tractor they run the same gas engine as a late 706 or 756 and are a ton heavier and as far as using a lot of gas well they burn gas but so does and M , put and M under a two row picker in good corn and in the humps and bumps around here and it will tell ya when it is lunch time fill after lunch and it will quiet at supper time that 40 gallons in 8 hours under the plow that same amount will last you over 12.
