adding live hydraulics to Farmall H

I am planning to add live hydraulics to my H. I have figured out how to mount the pump, but I have a couple of questions I would like to submit to the group about the rest of my plans:

1) I am going to use the original Lift-All reservoir. For the intake to the Live pump, I am going to use a 90 deg street elbow screwed into the drain plug opening on the Lift-All. I intend to weld a short nipple onto male end of the elbow, so that it doesn't pick up any debris that may accumulate in the bottom of the reservoir.

2) I am planning to plumb a standard 2 way hydraulic valve into the Lift-all fill pipe, using a tee and nipple, then adding another short nipple for the Lift-all fill cap. I am going to attach a rod similar to the regular Lift-all rod to the handle on the 2 way valve to operate it from the tractor seat. I am assuming I will have to fabricate a strap or something, maybe connected to the fuel tank stud, to brace the valve.

3) Do I need a pressure relief valve, or is one built into the std. 2 way valve? It is my understanding that there is--I may have to adjust it to 1000 lbs?

4) Can I leave the regular Lift-all gears and pump intact and continue to use it? I am currently using 20W non-detergent in the reservoir. Is this ok for use with the live pump also?

5) I am putting an in-line filter on the reservoir-to-live-pump hose.

I am not planning to use the hydraulics for general things like raising mowers, planters, maybe light loader work.

Thanks for taking the time to read my rather long post. I do appreciate all your input and help!

I added Live hyds to my "47 M last year. I placed several magnets in the bottom of the lift-all (now resevoir)to help catch the real small stuff. I forgot to add an inline filter last year, so I will do that this year.

link will show pictures of add on tank i made for mine. holds just over 6 gallons. has a suction strainer in tank and also a spin on filter in return line.

1) If you plan to put a suction line strainer between the Liftall housing and the pump, you don't need the nipple to trap debris in the sump. You want it going to the filter to be eventually eliminated at filter change time. Besides, you're only letting sediment rob you of precious capacity.

2) Sounds good.

3) You didn't mention the type or capacity of your live pump. You would do well to use an open centered valve so you have constant flow and minimal heat buildup. It should have a built-in pressure relief valve and should be set to protect your pump. If you get a closed centered valve, your relief valve will operate constantly when not raising or lowering your implements, putting a major strain on the entire system.

4) Yes, you can leave the liftall intact but it sort of defeats the purpose of adding a live pump. I recommend gutting the housing and making a plate and gasket to cover the opening. It will give more capacity to your system.

5) A suction filter is recommended to extend the life of your pump. Replaceable element (spin-on) filters are preferred over the screen type.
