For those who have been following my posts about our uncle's death on the farm I want to say thanks for your responses, your condolences and especially your sharing of similair stories. We need to remind each other of the daily dangers. Uncle Charlie made a mistake and we are all guilty of taking short cuts. He didn't put the pins in the bottom of the spear where it attaches to the loader. The weight of the bale would keep the spear in place until it was raised way up, crossing the yard he bounced in some ruts and the weight transferred over top dead center, releasing spear, bale and all down on top of him. He was 87 chronologically but he was 67 in mind and spirit. He had won many awards for his dairy herd over the years(Breed Production Average). When he went out of milking he just had to do something, so he got into the beef buisiness. He just bought a new GMC pick up, just had a pot load of cattle delivered, had just passed his Ontario Driver's Test that is mandatory for everyone over 85..he was looking forward ...So guys, put those shields in place, put the pins and clips in , check for wear and metal fatique, keep the loader low when moving and be carefull. Again, I think it is important for Farmallers to remind each other , through our stories and experiences so we aren't statistics. thanks everyone...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Warmest regards and my condolences. He sounds like somebody I would have liked to have known.
When the elderly pass on, the tendency is to speculate on the fact that they had a good long life. I, for one, have always felt a tearing loss of not just the person but the wealth of knowledge and experience he would have brought to my life. Very sorry for your loss.

Michael, so sorry to hear of your Uncle Charlie's passing. He sounds like the kind of man we all aspire to be - one who is active and pursuing his dreams at an age where most men have parked themselves on the front porch of a retirement home. May his family find comfort in the days ahead.
