I have a Farmall super c that has a original 6 volt system on it, The tractor has no wire harness at this time, can I start the tractor with a 12 volt batterie by running a hot wire ? Or will it hurt the coil ?
Thanks JOE

I'd buy a 6 volt battery and use the positive terminal for ground. You can make your own battery cables with welding cables and just solder the spades on. Hal

Got a hand crank? I'd just crank start it.

The old 6 volt system used a positive ground on the battery. On most 12 volt systems there was a
ballast resistor in the ignition circuit to drop
the 12 volts to 6 volts. I do not think the 6 volt coil can withstand that higher voltage and your generator and regulator may be damaged. Hal

The tractor will start & run just fine on 12 volts. The problem is with the charging system, lights, & ignition.
With no wiring harness, the charging & lights should not be a problelm. The ignition will work fine, just not as long with 12 volts applied to it. For a short operating interval (loading on a trailer, moving in a shop, etc.) your SC will run just fine.
PS: The engine should have battery-coil ignition, not magneto ignition.

12 volt starters can be driven by 24 and even 36 volts at the dragstrip.I think you have a magneto then it should not affect the coil. All electrical components are destroyed by heat.If parts dont overheat[in general]they can be run at overvoltages. If you have a batt/coil ignition just swap to an old twelve volt coil.My whole thinking here may be incorrect so others more familar with that specific tractor may tell you better.

Nearly all SC's and C's for that matter will have a distributer, this is not etched in stone as mags were still an option. Simplest thing for him to do is to get a new 6 volt battery. I've never gotten a straight answer (other than possibly blowing up a 6 volt by jumping with a 12) as to whether any 6 volt components are damaged by merely starting on 12 volts or not. If I wanted to do that, I would probably avoid the battery and connect direct to the starter -- lot of sparks.
