Hi Guys,

First a quick update. The H is split, engine is out and once the crank is out today, it's ready for the machine shop. Wow, did you all ever make that easy for me - thanks for the great advice.

The next question: Concensus seems to be, while the tractor is split replace the clutch. Here is my next concern. Do I replace the entire clutch assembly ($200+), or only the plate (about $100)?

Also, should I replace the throwout bering (it seems a little worn so I'm leaning toward replacement)? Anything to inspect/replace while I'm in?

Thanks for the advice (again).

The pilot bearing would be the hardest to replace when the tractor is together. All the other parts could be replaced but if it were mine I would replace the clutch disc and TO bearing at minimum.

Pressure plate should be replaced unless it is in very good condition. Same with flywheel resurfacing.

Life sure is a lot easier with the tractor split.

Most machinery doesn't allow the luxury of clutch replacement without tran or engine removal, one of the great features of Farmalls.

174.95 exchange for a rebuilt would be the way to go and resurface the flywheel.

Slappy - What to do depends somewhat on how you plan to use your tractor. If it's just gonna be for parade/show or occasional light work, so long as the flywheel and pressure plate surfaces are not warped, they show only minor heat cracking, and the cover mechanism is in good shape (no busted springs, worn fingers, etc.) I'd leave it as is. However it it's gonna be a working tractor, best to resurface/replace the clutch parts as needed.

For the clutch disc, if the hub springs and splines are not worn take it to a clutch/brake shop and have the old disk rebuilt. It'll cost about half the price of a new disc.

Definitely install new throwout and pilot bearings! They're cheap, and they'll never be easier to replace.

Tip: While you've got the tractor split check carefully the teeth on the flywheel ring gear. If they're at all worn on the side facing the starter, replace the ring gear now. It'll cost less then $40, and may save you splitting the tractor again in the near future!

You can buy the clutch pack on ebay, new, for a lot less than 200 bucks.

Better to be safe then sorry but you can replace some clutch parts on an H through the bottom though. Look for discoloration and flatness of the pressure plate. Also cracks and the flywheel Cracks, Discoloration, You could take them to the person doing the crank they would tell you and some can turn the flywheels. JON

Good idea while you're in there to replace the TOB and pilot bearing too.
