My Father-in-law needs to replace the ring gear in his "C" . He has separated h's and m,s before but he never has split a C. Once he block s up under the rear, what is the best and safest way to move the front half out of the way. Thanks JRV

JRV: I told you someone else's idea on how to split a tractor, now my own idea or the way I do it.

Choke rear wheels, place a bottle jack under clutch housing. Place a hardwood pallet under front end. (in the case of a narrow front remove front wheels) Block the entire front end using good wood blocking 2 or 3 points. Use ratchet tie down straps to anchor front end to blocking and pallet. Then use a pallet jack to handle the entire front end. I have used this on every thing from SA to a 560 diesel. I even split an articulated tractor with this taking the back half with the jack.

The pallet jack is never tied up under some part. One could have a dozen projects on the go at once.

Hugh, thanks also for this info. My father-in-law has the necessary materials left over from his seed selling venture. You have been very helpful.

Engine hoist (shop crane ) the easyest just block up rear end and go. Or do as Hugh says thats how I split 460 and up also on wide fronts I have read (I believe in I.T. manuals ) that you can block the engine to the wide front and use a rolling jack also. If you block please wire blocks so they cant fall out..I have never done it that way and I really am careful with top heavy loads because they can be very dangerous.. Once they start to fall watch out they go fast...

JRV: Wide front or narrow? I saw a novel idea recently for narrow front, but would work on wide front as well. A roughly 5' piece of 6" chanel iron bolted to those 3 cultivator mounting hole at front, on each side. These chanels went down at an angle to about 15" off floor at clutch housing. Had a cross piece of square tubing at lower end. The square tubing was just large enough to accomodate a set of binder truck wheels. The binder truck wheels gave great support for the front end.

It is a narrow front. Thanks for the info. I have the materials plus a shop hoist to try this. JRV

If you have a couple of 6-8" long 1/2" coarse bolts, you can thread them into the bellhousing when you take a couple of the regular bolts out. That will help keep everthing lined up for reassembly. You will still need to support the front though.

I bolt a 2x10 on each side of the torque tube. The square flat places there are ideal for that. Then I use air pressure in the front tires to put weight on the 2bys and level it when putting it back together, a floor jack under the back end. It works slick.

The ring gear can be used over, Just heat the ring gear to remove and if the opposet side is like new turn it over heat it and put it back on it will work like a new one, or replace it.
