Michael, I am so sorry about your Uncle. I know a man that is 83 or 84 now still farming. Twenty years ago he had a bale come back on him, and hurt him.

Mike,

Sorry about your loss. I am sure he was a good farmer and at least passed doing his trade. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

Sorry to hear about your uncle but better for him to be out and doing something than just sitting around. As a side issue, this whole retirement thing takes on a completely new meaning when you retire. I "retired" three years ago and it only took two weeks to realize that it wasn't going to work. I had some previous experiences and skills to fall back on and took advantage of a couple of part-time opportunities. I'll be 62 next month and now am sure that I'll never "completely" retire. Between my home, family, grandchildren, part-time job and my tractors, there isn't enough time in a day for me anymore.
Again, sorry about your uncle and my thoughts are with you but as tragic as it was, I have to say it was better then being in a nursing home, waiting.

Mike, It is always a sad time whenever I learn of someone losing their life in a farming accident. It is no less sad to hear that your Uncle has passed away as a result of his. My condolences to you and your family. I hope that knowing he was doing something he loved to do will lessen the burden thrust upon the hearts of his family.

Michael: So sorry to hear of your uncle's accident. Some will argue that at 87 he shouldn't have been there. I disagree, far better for him than to be sitting around waiting to die. He did what he obviously enjoyed doing and had many more years of that enjoyment than most.

I remember once as a very young man, listening to an elderly speaker at a farm convention. That speaker was the late Hon. Harry Hayes, Canada's minister of Agriculture in the 1960s. Harry was well into his 70s when he acquired that job. Someone asked if he was ever going to retire. His responce," A lot of my school boy friends retired 15 years ago, I guess to die, as most of them have."

You people carry on and celebrate the full life your uncle led.

Michael, sorry to hear about your uncle. My condolences to the family. Same thing occurred two winters ago to a 76 year old farmer that lived east of my brother's farm. I know where your uncle was coming from, my Dad was the same way, he never wanted to retire from farming. The greatest joy in his life was to be outside doing farm work. He could never stand the thought of living the last years of his life in a nursing home. My Dad got his wish he passed away at 78 at home in his easy chair reading the paper and watching a ball game on TV. The fall before he had been hauling the corn wagons for us. The week before his death he had been to see his Doctor and had been given the OK to drive the tractor for spring planting. He was so happy,
just couldn't wait for the fields to dry up.

Blessing to the dedicated farmers where $$ are not the most important thing in their life.
