I'm helping a friend with an I-404 tractor and we want to buy a short block engine. The only short blocks I can find say they are for engine numbers 100500 and before.
Our tractor is a yellow industrial model made in 1963. Where can I find the engine number so we don;t spend money on a block that won't fit?

Thanks,
Stretch

The engine we want is from Walt's Tractor Parts. Here is what the ad says...
UT10011 404 with C135 engine
$200 core charge Casting number 375596 GAS
For tractors with serial number before 100500

Sorry, I should've posted that before.

Thanks,
Stretch

My VB catalog says the same thing. Only problem is the I 404 chassis serials only went from 501 to 11077. Engine serials don't match the chassis serials but if the engine serials started with 501, it is hard to imagine 100000 C 135's being built for all applications combined -- I wonder if that is a misprint??

I didn't answer your question. Unless IH changed the serial location when the C123 became the C 135, the serial number is on a machined boss under the #1 spark plug, provided it is not a factory replacement engine, then all bets are off. Also if the Yellow industrial is different from the red 404 utility, my statement about the chassis serial may be incorrect also, but unless someone says otherwise, IH didn't make 100000 C135's. If I'm out on a limb, someone with the correct data can saw it off.

Thanks CNKS. If I understand your reply correctly, there really aren't enough tractors out there so Walt's engine should fit. Which one is the #1 cylinder?
I guess I could go out there and look and see if they're marked. I could also call Walt's and see what they say.
You know the internet has so much information that, sometimes, we forget the basics..... ...

That it will fit is my opinion, but I have not seen your tractor, I was hoping someone else would confirm or deny what I said -- the number 1 plug is next to the radiator.

Is this an industrial 404 or an International 404. I was just looking at the original sales literature for both of these tractors in my files and it appears that the industrial used a different serial number sequence. I have the specs on both of these but have trouble finding out the basic differences between the two. Or is it a 2404 version? Migraine
