The torque tube will also have a casting date on it it and will be close to the actualy manufacture date of your tractor. I have a 1946 A, the engine was cast in April of that year and the torque tube was cast in February of 46.

Georgia Boy, the torque tube has 8638D stamped
on the side--What does that tell us ?
Is that Aug. 6, 1938 ?

I don't think that is a casting code, I think that might be a part number. A casting code is in the format Month-Day-Year. For instance the differential cover on our 1951 W6 has 12-26-T stamped in it. This means that it was cast December 26, 1950. The letter represents the year. Part numbers don't have the hyphens in between the digits. 8636D is probably the part number for the housing, because D, DA, and DAX were usually used by IH to indicate part numbers. Someone correct me if I am wrong. On the other hand, I don't own an A, so maybe they are different. Hope this helps.

9*8*D means Sept 8 1958, for that to be correct the 0-D should not be there. I assume you say a Super A or later engine because it has a covered opening for the hydraulic pump?

CNKS, I'm not sure on the engine..Someone here
said that if the number 354898R was stamped on the engine,it was a Super A--I don't see any
pump opening..

CNKS, after rechecking, there is a plate over
an opening just below the mag with two bolts.
I assume this is for the hyd pump, since I do see
a gear when I remove the cover..
