Hi everyone... Just need a few suggestions. I have been collecting toy tractors with my 4 children for about 13 years, more so since their dad died 4 yrs. ago. I am in an online (distance learning) nursing program and I am taking a Speech course this semester. I am doing an informative speech about collecting toy tractors and I need your input if you have time...

If you had never considered collecting toy tractors, what would get your attention?

In your experience, how do collections appreciate in value?

What is your favorite toy tractor manufacturer~ why?

etc. etc. etc. :)

Any relevant info. would be greatly appreciated. I don't hate anything in life except public speaking...so, if you don't have time to share in the forum, at least pray for me like you're begging for rain!

Thanks much for your time~ Heidi

Heidi:
Being raised on a farm & having used many of the "older" models, I personally like to collect those that I have operated at some time in the past.
They are great memory joggers and a way for me to connect my grandchildren to my past. My 2 sons & I have several Farmalls and are looking for more to restore. My oldest grandson now wants his "own" tractor so I better get to looking. Anyone have a SC or 200 for sale near Minnesota??
Best wishes for you & your family.

My toy tractor collecting goes right along with my collecting of the full size Farmall letter series tractors. When I aquire a new (to me)full size tractor I try to find the toy model of that tractor for my home office. Usually the life size tractors need a lot of work to bring them back to like new condition and having the model to look at keeps me on track to finishing the restoration of the full size one. There are some tractors that models of the same are not readly available so looking for them keeps me on the hunt for these models.

One other thing is that when my children put me in the home for the aged I am sure that they will not let me take my full size tractors with me. I am in hopes that they will let me take my models with me so that I will be able to use them to reminisce with the other old cogers about my younger life.

Needless to say, my collection of Farmalls are all out of the box and being enjoyed on a daily basis.

Heidi, last months Farm Collector has an article about three men who actuall hand make toys, it was a very good article and very interesting. The web sight is www.farmcollector.com. Along the side bar, you will see past articles,if you click on that it should take you to the article.

Heidi, Collecting tractors is like collecting anything else. What catches the attention of one person, may not someone else. What catches my attention is the attention to detail that the builder displayed. Therefore, I like precission models for that reason. As far as what appreciates in value, it is impossible to tell at the time of purchase, unless a particular model has shown a trend, and usually by that time, the average collector is priced out of the market. While one would assume that precission models would appreciate in value the most, that is not necessarily the case. There are quite a few special event models which have appreciated at a far greater rate than some of the precissions. The sad truth is that models appreciate better if left undisturbed in the box, but then they arent enjoyed nearly as much because they aren"t on display. I agree that collecting tractors should be done because one likes the activity of collecting and enjoying them afterward, and not for any potential monetary appreciation.

Hi Heidi, I have to agree with everything that Dave has already said except Ertle Is my Favorite. And I like the cast models not the plastic ones. MAGMAN

There are few things I like BETTER than a public forum to air my views, that is why I took on my part-time teaching gig with the college a few years back. It wasn't always that way, though, so I'll try to help you out...

"If you had never considered collecting toy tractors, what would get your attention?"

Very accurate, detailed, scale models of actual models (particularly if I own the real thing) with at least a few implements available.

"In your experience, how do collections appreciate in value?"

In my experience, they don't. Almost everything collectible these days is mass produced. The old stuff is usually priced high already. A few items may go up but most won't and you spend so much time and money collecting that it is truly a misconception that you are getting ahead. Collect because you love it, not for money.

"What is your favorite toy tractor manufacturer~ why?"

Don't have one, but have seen some Franklin Mint stuff that is pretty nice. That would be as close as I come.

Good luck with your higher education!
