Rebuilding a TA

Looks like I have a couple more of these to do.
If you remember I purchased a rebuilt TA from SWR for $399 and put that into my 400. Works good no problems with it.

I have since purchased one of those TA rebuild videos that show a rebuild of the Ramp and roller on a SMTA. Cant get any simpler to rebuild one of those if its just slipping on the low side.
About the only extra work you have to do other than all the work getting the TA removed is a few extra screws and a slim screw driver.
I priced rollers at the IH dealer. $1.47 each X 8.

I still have my core from my 400. I think I will give that a try. Hmmm maybe I can put that on my website too.

There used to be a guy that sold sets of oversize rollers and the ramp for them on eBay. As I recall the set was about $115. He also sold a lot of other TA parts.

I am not complaining about it. SWR has the best price for a rebuilt with the sprag type ramp and roller.

But heck if you can do it your self for $12 thats a big difference.

kelly,
dont be afraid of the d. mine is a 282, keep the glow plugs in good shape and you will never have anything to complain about on a 706. i sold a 300 to buy this tractor. i used half the fuel as i did gas doing the same amount of hay on the same ground. not to mention the 06 has a lot of nice features the 300 didnt. also 706 weighs more and towing baler and wagon on hills that is an issue for me.

Thats the plan. but then again my plans never seem to work the way I uhhhh.... plan.

I am real afraid of the big D. I know if I boo boo on a purchase of a gasser I can fix my way out of it. Diesel's can be a big money pit if you choose wrong.

The o6,56,66,86 have a hydrulic clutch pack.. DO NOT TAKE IT APART!!!! Go to your local case dealer and get a lifetime ta and your problems will be over. On the old dry ta's the sprag bearing is usually what goes out on them. Watch your adjustments for all of these as they will be the life of the ta!!

Naw,

None of the small chassis tractors have a clutch pack in the T/A.

Scotty,

It really is not that big. It only has 59 of the fabled & much sought-after German 310 diesel horsepower. Come get the darned thing!

I'll help ya load so I can make room for a juicy 766D. :>)

It seems to me that at one time there was a “rebuilt” TA ramp and roller clutch assembly available that had larger diameter rollers in it. I was never sure if the larger rollers were by design or if it was to compensate for the grinding of the inner and outer parts, regardless, it seemed to make the TA more durable.

I’d suggest taking it apart and looking it over, maybe all you need are the rollers (lucky you) but you might need more.

Good luck!

Maybe you"r core is better than the one I had. On my SMTA the ramp for the rollers was worn and grooved, and about half or more of the springs were gone or crushed. I got the ramp and roller setup, a rebuilt for about $100. My carrierin the center was ok. My point is you may need more than just rollers. Only way to find out is take it apart and check.

Thats true. But $100 is still better that $399.
I think I will run out and get that TA and start paying with it.

Let us know how you make out with the TA repair. I have the same problem with my 400. My 400 also needs a new hydraulic pump and between the TA and the pump the cost adds up pretty fast. Sounds like the video is a good idea too.

Hey Kelly, Never worked on any of those big tractors, just wondering if the old rollers can be reground to take the flat spots off? Or do you need to go out and buy new rollers? I probablly dont need to know all that, considering that the biggest tractor I ever thought about buying is my buddies Super H, and we all..... know they didnt have TA!!!

For one dollar and 47 cents. I dont think I would even bother with trying that.
But I dont think you could though as it needs to be a certain thickness.
