We use our B to rake hay and move hay wagons. We use 20 ft racks and regularly have 200 to 250 bales on each rack. The B pulls them out of the field and up to the barn.

Mine pulled about $3,000 out of my wallet when it decided it needed restoration. It only put about $2,100, back 10 years later when it decided it needed a change in lifestyle.

Whoa, that is one awesome H. My 1086 moans trying to pull our 22 foot disk. CHAD ought to have that one to pull with. Seriously though we used a BN for years. Pulled a NH 66 pto baler with it. Pulled an 8 foot tandem disk and a 2 x 14 inch plow. Forget it on a hill though, because it is going to flip back over on you. Gutsy little tractor.

In Nebraska test # 331 the maximum pounds pull was 2463 pounds at 1.83 mph. This is a dead pull, not like gross weight of a trailer which would be much higher.

I've pulled dead F20 Farmalls on the trailer with a B but you have to hold your mouth just right.

I have a 41 B. It will easly pull a 1 16 plow on level ground. I have pulled a hay rake in 2nd gear. I think it would pull 50 bales of hay in most hay fields with a wagon. I think it would pul; an 10ft wing, or a 8ft tandem disc, 4 sections of harrows, a 7ft mower, and a modern square bailer if taken slowly, or an old time bvailer with engine and front trucks at normal speed. 4 row planter, 16 hole drill, small hammermill, standard buzzsaw, Hope this helps

We have pulled many 100 bale loads, 50# bales to the barn with a B. It will pull a rake in 3rd.

8ft tandem disk? -- that's all an H wants, even then not very deep.

I pulled a 8ft horse disc and it didnt know it was there. I then hooked a 2 section harrow and disced and harrowed at the same time. My dad had a 48 H and pulled a 22ft JD wing disc. I helped do that MANY many times, as he had that disc from the time I was around 7 till after I graduated high school

I probably spent 2-3000 hours on an H pulling a heavily weighted 6 foot tandem disk at full angle in a silt loam soil-3rd gear. By tandem, I mean FOUR gangs, I cannot speak for a horse drawn disk. An 8 ft tandem with new disks would make that H grunt in 2nd, in our soils. My dad used to have B's I believe he used it on the same disk, with less angle and weight, that was before my time. I assure you that a B will not pull a 8 ft tandem disk at much of an angle or depth. Unloaded, in a light soil with no weight and at a narrow angle --- maybe.

Well, since I havnt pulled a tandem disc, I cant argue the point. We never felt the need to put weights on discs. I have a IHC wing disc without the wings anymore that is alot heavier than dads JD, and it was a hard pulling wing disc. Since the wings on it swung around and pind on behind, and was so harfd pulling, I got to leaving the wings pinned behind. They then disced already disced grownd and it wasnt so hard to pull with an F-20. When I moved down here from Kansas, I loaded the disc with tongue up in the air, and had to take the wings off, and left them there. Down here, its sandy, and its enough of a pull for a F-30 witnout the wings, But I still say I remember dad with a 48 H pulling a 22ft JD wing disc, and that was in the Missouri River foothills, and was darn steep hilly ground. The trick ive lkearned that dad never did is to pull the pins out of the drawbar and let it swing. That helps ALOT on turns

Terminolgy differs from place to place. I assume by wing disk, you mean a 2-section disk, with one wing that folds up or behind and that the disk can be used with the wing up or down. The wings on the larger modern disks are usually hydraulic raised or lowered, mainly for transport, but can also be used with the wings up. I don't believe I have seen one like the one you have. When I respond to posts like yours, I really don't mean to correct anyone, I am responding to clarify for others, which in this case, if they are not tractor literate, might actually go out and buy an 8 ft tandem disk for a B. However, I have probably 5000 hours on an H (used to have the hemmoroids to prove it) -- I didn't know an H would pull a 22 ft anything, but I am not familiar with your disk.

CNKS: I think he must have one of those disks I've spoken of so many times. You remember the type that are as effective as a land roller.

We have moved gravity wagons with 300bu corn around that would be at least around 16,000 or better. What do you have in mind?

I'm thinking about running some hayrides at a local festival, and I need to know what size/type of wagon to build based on the pulling and stopping capacity of the BN. If I can get this set up, I want it to be as safe as possible.

Martin: I used to do hayrides and sleighrides, but that was 30 years ago. Today I wouldn't touch it, liability risk is just too great. Even 30 years ago insurance companies were very sticky when came to people around tractors. I doubt if that has improved. I think you will find most insurance companies have an out clause if your using tractor for work other than it was intended for.

One of the problems I encountered near the end of my doing hayrides, people wouldn't stay put. They thought it sport to be jumping on and off.

I know a guy who lost his farm, as insurance said he wasn't covered for hayrides. Drunk driver ran into back of hayride, a week later the wife of a lawyer on hayride developed back problems. These people were members of a club the farmer belonged to. He was not in the business of hayrides, it was a one time event on a private road, a road he was assured was blocked to all other traffic. By the way, the drunk had no assetts, not even a drivers licence.

I have been around B FARMALLS since 1947 used them in fields harrowing cultivating hauling water pulling windrowers ear corn and shelled corn and many other things. Using one for a hayrack with people is not a good idea unless you go very slow on a level surface and not much distance. Just do not have brakes to stop with such a load. These are great little tractors but just not safe for a hay ride.

Hate to be a wet blanket, but if you want to be safe get more tractor. Wagon + bales + people may be a lot more than you bargained for.

Pulling isn't going to be a problem. Stopping might be. It's a light tractor with mechanical brakes, I don't know what your terrain is, but stopping is what I'd be most concerned about.

hi red dave, just an idea and i may be as full of stuff as a christmas turkey, but if your going to build the hay wagon, how about using a 6 lug trailer axle on the rear of the wagon, with electric brakes ? the battery could be hidden under the wagon in a small box, and the electric controller could be attached within reach of the tractor seat, painted red, all but the purist wouldn't notice that something "extra" had been added, and you would have plenty of brakeing power if needed, you would have to occasionally put a charge on the battery . just an idea, ericlb

I did that for my H when I wanted to pull a heavy trailer that had been made into a parade float. In the little mountain town, steep streets, small children, sorry old band brakes on the H. After we made it down my sister's driveway I didn't have to use it again, but it made me feel a lot better.
I went to a trailer hitch store and bought a controller and wiring just like was installed in my Tahoo. Wired the controller sraight to the battery, mounted the seven wire plug on the pto handle. Didn't look all that bad, either.
