Nissan alternator: internally regulated?

I found out from AutoZone's website that they carry the alternator off the '79 Nissan 620 that seems to be a popular choice for 12V conversions. $49.99

Anyway, they also list an external voltage regulator as an "also check" item... From the posts I've read here, it's internally regulated?

What's the scoop?

I called the AutoZone in our area and they said it
had the internal regulator. Same price too. Hal

I converted my H with the Hitachi 14231 alternator and I didn't need an exteral regulator. I believe this is the same alternator you are considering as well. Mine works great and fits under the hood very nicely. Was simple to convert using Bob Melville's wiring diagrams. Installed a ballast resistor along with a 10 watt - 10 ohm resistor from Radio Shack in place of the light in his diagram. Mine starts charging at starting speed. My email is unblocked if you need more information.
