I have a leaking pivot shaft seal on my Farmall 400. It looks like the only way to replace it is to drop the front end and pivot shaft.

Does anyone have any shortcuts that would not require the complete removal of the front end and pivot shaft? I was thinking that you could drop the shaft just enough to access the seal and pound it out from the back, then replace the seal from underneath.

Put a new bushing in above the seal, these get worn so that a new seal can't keep a grip the shaft.

Frank - I"ve found that even replacing that seal does not always cure a leaky steering box.

An easier solution is to simply drain any oil remaining in the steering box then pack it full with good wheel bearing grease. Grease will lube the worm and gear as well as oil, and it won"t leak out of a bad pivot shaft seal.

Frank you will have to drop the shaft out you need to come from the bottom to drive the new seal in.
