Hi

I"ve inherited an IH 706D. We"ve managed to get it running, but notice that the twin PTO shafts always turn, regardless of the position of the control lever (up or down). 1. Is "down" meant to be the off position? 2. Should the PTO stop turning when the main clutch is depressed? 3. Is there a separate clutch for the PTO drives? 4. Any thoughts on how to get the PTO to stop?

If you have the pto rebuilt and back in the tractor find sombody with a pressure guage and the special fitting to check the pressure. I like to have them set to about 250 to 300 psi. This is adjusted by turning the control stem from the pto housing so it pulls up more(under the rubber boot if its still on). If the pressure can't even reach 230 psi then the linkage is wore and needs to be replaced.

The PTO setup on the 706 is independent of the main clutch. It has its own hydraulic clutch. Others mentioned that the brakes may be worn out. We rebuilt the PTO clutch on out 706 and it wasn't a bad job. You'll have to drain the transmission/hydraulic oil down past the level of the PTO housing to avoid a large oil mess. The PTO unit is heavy and bulky, so a second set of hands will be helpful when removing and re-installing it. Also, it is possible that your PTO shutoff problem is caused by the control linkage being out of adjustment. The adjustment is located where the linkage goes into the PTO housing. Maybe someone else can provide some info on how to distinguish between worn PTO brakes and linkage misadjustment.

THere are two things that can make a Hdy. pto stay running , one is the hdy brake in there is wore out or the clutch pack is warped or welded it's self togethereanyway you look at it it must come out to be fixed . When pulling the pto unit out you must tip it rearward as it comes out of the rearend housing and do not bang it around doing so as you will damage the pickup tube. To replace the brake the unit must be tore all the way down and you need a shop press or a big spring compressor and if never done before a book .

Ginia the PTO have spring loaded brake the hydraulic pressure the applies the clutch releases the brake so I would saw the brakes are bad there are 3 buttons about 1 inch in diameter for the brakes. Up on the lever is in gear and down is out of gear.
