third party image

Finally decided to modify the hood on my 300U to clear the GM 10SI alternator.I wanted to maintain the original mounting arrangement while giving plenty of space for the alternator, fan, pulley and adjusting bracket. Here is what I came up with.Fully welded, and using as much of the oem sheetmetal as possible.Solid as a rock.Clears just fine!

You can't see it very well from the angle you posted but I doubt it looks very well from the front when it on the tractor.

Believe it or not, that bulge in the hood sticks out 2".That image sorta hides that fact. So,from the side,it looks near factory.

A Hitachi alternator part no 14231 out of 78-79 Nissan pick up will fit right in , they are quite a bit smaller then regular alternator.

I went with the GM because of its lower cost, and ready availability.I'm usually not big on GM stuff, but this is one instance where they did good.If only it was smaller....and no,I never considered those later compact Delcos....they are pricey and pretty crappy. The bearings dry up because of the heat they produce and are a constant source of problems. At least with the 10SI its keeping with IH's original intent.....all Delco components (Starter,Generator,coil....).
..if that means anything...
lol

Hacking it up was never my intent.I usually dont do things that way.Unlike the previous boneheads that have worked on this thing the past 50 years.
Shocking some of the stuff I have found they did (or didnt) do to it....

Paul, nice job on the hood. They just layed the hood on the alternator on my 350u.Its amazing the stuff that these farmer's did to these tractors and they still ran.I quess you have to remember the really just tried to keep them running.exhaust systems jury rigged.Look at the prices on some of this stuff. You have to be crazy to put this much money in this.Spliting a tractor this size is no fun for a farmer! For us hooples we eat this stuff up. I would not want to depend on making a living on this.
