Wow I Finally got over the sticker Shock from Saturday and desided to post. I think the guy must have thought my name was Allen From NE or something. I could have sworn the man said $90.00 To Turn 10 thousands off my crank shaft. Well If you guys remember my post from last week when I said the block and head were a brownish color. Not Anymore They look like they just came from a casting place where they were made. {Beautyfull}He said they just got done baking them the other day when I saw them and after that they has them shot blasted with steel shot. So between the crank being turned and the head and block being cleaned and magnafluxed it cost me $242.00 plus Tax. EEEEEHHHHH H Like I said he must have seen me coming a mile away. I figured $180.00 at the most. And by the way he also took all the plugs out of the oil returns and pressure cleaned them for me to. But he forgot to put the soft plugs back in. I guess I will need to find new ones or something. So Iguess its going to be awhile before I can order the motor Kit. Gotta get mom ma something nice for valentines day for putting up with me and my RED TOYS all year first. JON

I live in a low labor cost area and that price is reasonable even for here.

I think what you gave is fair for the work done. Amount of the bill is quickly forgotten when job is properly done and engine is operating years later...

thats not to far out of line. i would be real careful cleaning that block before assembly. don"t like that shake & bake cleaning. might look pretty, but that shot can hide in alot of places. but the hot oil will eventually wash it out.

Yea I will be rewarded with her having a lawyer thats better than my machinest. And more exspencive and I will have to flip the bill for that too. All in all it was not to bad He said $90.00 for crank and like $40.00 for the block cleaning and magnaflux and $25.00 for the head clean and magnaflux. He charged me $100.00 for the crank. Probly charged the extra ten becuase I walked in while he was doing it and said wow I always wondered how they did that and he showed me a little . But thats only $165.00 and I knew that was a good price. I will have to study the bill a little and see what else he charged me for. That extra $75.00 could have bought flowers and a box of chocolate Forest. I picked up a cub last year and she already made sure I knew if anything happened that tractor was hers.LOL . Thats why the H is getting the rebuild and not the cub. He He He . Actually that $75.00 was for a head valve set I was going to order. JON

That's cheap. Machinest I'm using will charge me $140 to grind the crank, called me today and said the head needs to be milled, another $66. Including the engine kit I'm buying from the same place, total cost will be $1500-2000, most likely, including him putting in the new sleeves and cam bearings, plus the valve job, etc. Also hot tanking the block and head. Buying a rebuilt cam and lifters also. The only thing not new or rebuilt will be the block and head, and they will be clean. This is not a cheap hobby, and virtually impossible to make any money, if and when I decide to sell something.

$90 is a good price for turning a crank. $152 for the block, head, and magnaflux may be a little higher than my other projects, but not out of line.

Whether or not you authorized all the work that was done is to be decided between you and him. I think he did a thorough job, nothing that should not have been done to accomplish a first rate overhaul.Sounds like he may have done more than you expected. As to the price, I just paid my machine shop $90 to press & fit 4 wrist pin bushings and $60 to true up a manifold. Did you get a quote in advance?

Mag man, I am not sure if he did or not, I've put $150 into a head to get it magnifluxed and the valve seats. I have a machinist that does a lot of work for me, sometimes I think something will be $20 to have brazed or repaired and it will be $100, next time I think something will likely cost 75 to get fixed and it will be $16...I can never estimate the guy, what is important is that he does a good job and when all is averaged, what I get fixed over a year and what I pay over a year it isn't too bad. If he did a good job for you it isn't too far out

I agree, you may have thought $90.00, but what you were actually charged wasn't out of line for the work done.

Pretty simple really, valentines are red, and tractors are red. All you need to do is tie a bow on one of your tractors and I am sure you will be greatly rewarded.
