Crossing the Line?

Okay,

I've decided to put two of those gargantuan 12 volt John Deere batteries wired in parallel in my 966 because the local red mech recommended it.

He says they last forever and provide far superior cranking in cold temps than do the two 6 volt batteries wired in series.

I told him that as long as the tractor was under his roof, he was to consider it his own personal tractor and treat it as such.

Is this considered treason? :>(

I would only do this if they are half the money of the two 6's. My 966 fires after about three revolutions, sitting outside down to 15 degree F. Below that I use the indoor tractor. Those two 6 volt IHC batteries do just fine at that temp. Where do you plan on going to get to minus double digit temps? You may be embarking up the road to future problems in the other areas of your electrical system. IHC paid their engineers good salaries to design a good product. If it ain't broke , don't fix it!

Hi John,

They build 'em just like the IH ones, so will be mounted the same as those old 6 volt guys.

Allan, Are there any other changes in this conversions. I will admit that I do need to keep my batts charged up to spin the engine so it starts right up. Any other info would be greatly appreciated.
Later,
John A.

Wait 'til you see what I'm going to do to this black stripe color scheme. It's gonna bring tears to your eyes and a pout to your lower lip. :>(

Allan,
Last time we put a set of John Deere batteries in the same shed with our IHs, had a pretty big fight out there. My M kept kicking that set of batteries out the door when I turned my head. :>)
Hope your 966 does not get sick at his stomach. Other than that a battery is a battery.
Jim

the 6 volt will work just fine if you put a block heater in it. easier on the whole kit and kabutal. 2 = 12 volt will spin it faster and longer but a block heater is well worth the money
my 5 cents

Yes Sir,

I know. Block heaters are a matter of course out here in this country.

I don't think the dealers even order a new tractor without the heaters. Last one I saw without a heater was a 656, which received a tank heater.

Now if ya want some butt kicken starten the install 4 Optium 6 volts heck just two of them will start it but add 4 just might throw the starter out on the ground. We used just two of them on the MM GBD when we built it for pullen and it had almost 800 cu.in with real high comp like 16 to one we needed to shave weight off everywhere and that was one place that it is had to shave weight and still have enough for starting if ya just happen to kill it on the track.

Optima.. thems are Optima batteries. The specs do look good on them, though. Especially the 6 volt ones. I'm getting a smaller 12 volt one for my car, but can't afford to pay for it until my home equity loan is approved.

I look at it this way, a battery is a consumable, and John Deere makes consumable tractors, so they should know what they are dealing with. The battery will think it's died and gone to heaven.

Allan: I can confirm that a John Deere will start better with those batteries. I always gave the credit to the Deere as it fired up so much quicker on those cold mornings. Whether those batteries will have the same effect on a 66 series Farmall is quite another matter. I'll put on my green, red and yellow hat and think about that one.

You have to paint the starter green, but JD doesn't make the batteries anyway. The guy that did my 460 rocker arms has a 560D, he has a couple of the 12 volt optima batteries, claims it is 24 volt using a 12 volt starter and solenoid, then it operates on 12 volts -- post on this a few days ago, what he said may contradict part of that post, I plead ignorance. In other words you should be fine.
