Cub engine - oil pick-up screen question

I'm working on a Cub engine that had a low oil pressure issue the last time I started it. I have the oil pan off and the first thing I noticed was the pick-up tube screen appeared to have collapsed a bit (almost like the screen was being sucked in towards the tube. The screen appeared to be free of foreign matter. There was a minor amount of dirty sludge in the bottom of the pan.

Has anyone seen an oil pressure screen collapse and cause a low oil pressure problem like that? I'm going to pull the oilpick-up tube out next and see if there is an obvious blockage. Any other suggestions for diognosing a low pressure situation?

Partially collapsed pick-up screens are not uncommon on cubs.

Hey Bama Binder , I haven't seen you around for a while. You can get a tester to check actual oil pressure to ensure it is not a faulty oil pressure guage. I would persue what you are doing and check that no sludge has gotten into the pick up tube and pump. I had sludge build up on a B250 and I cleaned the pan and screen and now get consistent oil pressure. I was wondering if the pan had ever been dented in and straightened back out without checking the screen, it seems unusual for the screen to be bent up in, but over time it may have. Good luck with the job...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Hey Micheal...thanks for remembering me...it has been a while...too many project not enough time as it were.

That Cub has been the biggest PITA...If I didn't like it so much I'd sell it. I'm not ruling anythin out on this engine so past damage is a possibility.

I don't "think" that the internal tolerances are causing the oil pressure issue because I never had problems with a warm engine but rather had low pressure on start up. It had 0 pressure for 30 seconds or so. Finally the pressure came up..I know it because the engine slmokes just a little...and as soon as the oil pressure came up it started smoking.

I'm into the engine to replace the piston rings and clean / inspect / replace some valves...but I have to get at the oil pressure problem first.

Thanks again!
