I'll have to agree with Doug. The cost is probably justified in a semi but not an old tractor that we use or show occasionaly. I still didn't expect the high cost though. P.S.- IH Hy-Tran is around 35 - 40 dollars for 5 gal. The best reason for using it in trans/diff. is if tractor has a T/A. I tried a generic hyd. oil with a T/A a while back, T/A would not work. Changed to Hy-Tran and it started working. I wouldn't have believed it if I had not seen it for myself. I don't think the T/A will work well at all with gear oil either.

I can get AMSOIL Synthetic for slightly over $100 per 5 gallon pail. Not cheap when compared to mineral oil, but cheaper than you are talking.

Personally, I would not use any of those super-premium oils in a classic tractor. The cost just does not justify the use in those applications.

Thanks for posting the update. Probably won't go that route though it sounds like some pretty darn good gear oil. What brand and type was it?
