Chad: If you like both colors green and red buy an Oliver Super 77 or 88. With the 88 you will have more wallop the either M or 60 plus live pto. That is always my suggestion when guys can't decide between green and red. Go two in one.

Remember the sequence -- JD A/60/620/630. Farmall M/Super M/Super MTA/400/450. As to HP you need to compare "equivalent" models, along with the advantages and disadvantages of either. THAT will depend on the individuals bias, I am trying to give a middle of the road opinion, because both makes are good tractors. JD also had a 70/720/730, all of which, I believe, were larger than the M (don't mind being corrected). So, you need to compare apples to apples, etc. I refuse to put down either color, but they should be compared model to model.

CN,

Ya darn right! This whole thread is crossing models....apples to oranges, like you say.

There's not a thing wrong with those old 60s and shouldn't even be compared to a M. Different rigs entirely.

I suggest that you post the same question on the John Deere forum. There are lots of knowledgeable folks there who will give you the details about the 60.

traded my M for an A johnny. I thought that it was the best thing i ever did. but for farming a john deere just is not as convenent as a farmall. the hand clutch will get you every time. So i just traded my A for a 560 farmall.

An M is a good tractor, but so is a John Deere 60. I think i would rather have the 60, especially if it had the power steering. They are probably close in a drawbar pull, but the 60 has live pto, which will really help when your using it. It also has one more gear to choose from, on my M 4th is too slow for a lot of jobs, and 5th is way too fast.

My thought is anybody that has a Farmall and does not want it should trade it off or give it away.

There are plenty of folks that want them for someone who doesn't to put up with the aggravation of red paint.

Don't be too quick to trade based just on what you have heard or read. I would want to do an actual pto dynometer test first. I have seen Ms pitted against 620s, 630s, and 730s on the dyno. Those old Ms will hold their own and even outperfom most of the time.

Hi Chad,

Those 60s have a nasty habit of cracking the exhaust manifolds.

Otherwise, pretty darned good tractors, especially if you get a late model with the power steering.
