What type/size rotary cutter will a Super M handle when using it to cut native pasture and mesquite trees? Most trees are 2-3" but are in clumps. Also, any ideas to prevent repeated flats while mowing in/around/through mesquite?
Thanks

Thanks again for all the suggestions. looks like I have more thinking to do. I'll have to check on the bull dozer idea. Sounds pretty expensive-may be worth it. Thanks.

I have a 4', pull behind, Rotocycle stalk cutter made in Waco Texas. Old. built like a tank. Has one heavy blade and will schread about anything you can drive over. I have sheared a 1/2 pin and not torn it up.

I think most folks call someone with a dozer. I've been pulling them out with a chain with my M. Tie on to them a few feet high to get leverage. It breakes them off below the ground so you don't have trunk sticking up to puncture tires. Slow but works. then you can mow and spray the new growth.

Yepper,

I agree. Sounds like what is needed is a D8 Cat equipped with a dozer blade and a healthy set of rippers on behind.

My 2 cents,

Allan

I grew up in mesquite country, that stuff will almost break axe handles. I can't imagine using the tranmission driven pto on an SM to cut "clumps" of 3 inch diameter brush. Flats, fill your tires with concrete -- (no sarcasm), or get steel rears and fronts as Jossete suggests.

If you are indeed serious Mike at www.steelwheelranch.com has "skeleton steels" for $400 a pair. These sound like the ones I used on an H back in the 50's to cover narrow row crops. You may have trouble finding front steel. There are sources for "thorn-proof" aircraft tires that you may get by with on the front -- don't know. Make sure your bushhog has a shear pin that breaks before the pto does.

Thanks for the info. I have been looking for steel wheels-any suggestions? What variety of steel wheels will fit the Super M? How about old tires cut to fit over the tires on the tractor? As for the mesquite, I'll probably avoid the larger clumps and attack them with a chain saw.

Have super heavy duty 7 ft. Bush Hog brand and SM pulls it OK. Sometimes it might take first gear in heavy grass but I live in South East where grass grows fast and thick. Never had any experience with Mesquite but if it is anything like our thorn trees it is bad news.
