1466 steering motor-darndest thing

Yesterday I pulled the 1466 out to get the planter out. I let it idle for about fifteen minutes, when I went to get back on it there was about a gallon of hydraulic oil pumped out of the steering motor.

I pulled it up to the shop and took all of the tin work off. Sure enough, oil all over the steering motor. Checked the lines (all tight, couldn"t get that lucky) then I started it up to see where the oil was pouring out. Guess what, I couldn"t make it leak! I think the oil was comeing out of the top shaft seal, directly under the steering wheel.

Anybody have this problem before? Can that seal leak, then seat back up again? Is it really a job getting the steering motor out? I"m not looking forward to this one :(

The shaft seal isn't that bad to do and you can leave the hand pump right were it is. If the bottom seal is leaking to then you need to take the hand pump out. If you want instructions on how to do this let me or anybody else know.

I had exactly what you described happen on my 966 and I was really worried. It turned out that it was just the top seal and really a pretty quick and simple fix. Cleaning up the mess in the cab took almost longer than the fix. :>(

If you blew out the lower seal. You may want to check the hydraulic PSI. We have a 1468 that had a stuck relief valve and kept blowing seals out of the hand pump

Great, that"s the best news I"ve heard today! To replace the top seal I just pull the steering wheel and the four allen bolts (two are all ready out to get the inspection cover off)? I didn"t really inspect it, but I didn"t really see how to take the throttle apart by the steering motor. Any words of wisdom?

The last few that I've done have had tilt steering and thats set up just a little different than the non-tilt, so forgive me if I don't remember all the details. But anyway, you don't need to disconnect the throttle even though it would be a lot handier. Unbolt the hand pump from the throttle plate, the pump will drop a little and the plate should lift over and swing around, if not you may need to take the 4 lines loose to drop the pump down more. Then you can pull the whole thing out and work on it on the bench if you want to go this far. The shaft seal: in order there's a dust seal, snap ring, flat washer I think, brass bushing, and rubber seal. To get the bushing and seal out, cap the fittings, with a pliers turn the shaft like your steering, and the bushing and seal will push out. Sometimes they can be a bugger. Install the new rubber seal facing the right way and careful not to damage it. If you decide to put the bottom seal in, there are 2 different seals(short or tall). The one you need would be about 3/8 inch taller than the metal sleeve it goes in(not 1/8 inch taller if you have the tall sleeve). It needs to squish that much to seal. Make sure the dimple on the plate lines up with the cap when you torque it down(shaft will turn like before if it lined up). I recomend to do both seals and then its done and don't have to worry about it. That is completely up to you. Hope this is clear enough for you cause sometime explaining it sounds worse than it is to just do it.

Just a quick note, when doing the bottom seal put the pump in a vice so the bottom is facing up. You only need to take the plate, sleeve, and seal off. Leave the guts were there at.
