Got one brake off the 300U today.What a mess! Rust,dirt,rust,grease,rust....you name it.Missing dust boot,broken spring,grease covered linings,leaking seal...ugg.

Question:Is the shaft seal visible on the outside? Apparently if it is,its totally missing the rubber lip.I cant seem to see where the seal ends and the trans case begins.....

Paul, the bull pinion retainer has two indentions on the surface that mates to the chassis, they're 180 degrees apart. Use two large screwdriver or pry bars you can get the retainer off. The only thing holding it is the o-ring. You can get the seal from NAPA, etc. by giving them them this Chicago Rawhide number - #18733. I bought the boots a few months ago from dealer, I assume they still stock them($4.50 ea.). I don't know how much the expanders cost from the supplier you mentioned, but OEM will turn drums & expanders, new balls, boots and discs included for $118 per side. If you want brakes to be like new this would be the best deal IMHO. Did you get the hyd. problem worked out?

Is this piece pretty thick? I'm showing 2 items in the parts list that are mounted outboard. The thinner oil seal housing and the thicker bearing retainer.Do you remove both? I dont want the differential or bull pinion shaft to come apart if I take too many things out.....

I cannot see a thinner item past the thicker piece. It all looks one piece to me.
Is the oil seal visible from inside the brake area? I see a gaping hole and no seal lip at all.

The part that you need to remove is part # 358100R11, illustration #1 in the parts manual. You can see the seal barely. Seal is removed from the rear, so retainer must be removed. Wire brush the area and i think you'll see the parting line between the two parts(ills.#1 & #6 in pts. man.) The outer flang of retainer is probably 3/8 to 7/16 thick, the other flange is 3/4 to 1 inch thick. Nothing should fall out, if bull pinion does come out it's no big deal, just slide it back in.

Didnt get into the hydraulics yet,due to how long this brake deal took.I rounded the head off one cover bolt (its behind the loader support frame tubing),had to chisel that off,and then ran into more problems getting the linkage off the yoke/adjuster.Oh,and I primed the bucket and some of the fast hitch plug in arms (for the weight barrel).And.....changed the 2nd tie rod assembly..and tightened up the way loose steering arms.

From what I gather, there is a housing that contains the oil seal (bull pinion) and has a large o-ring around its backside. My question is....how do you break that thing loose? I cant even see the parting line between trans case and that seal/bearing carrier.

I see that CASE no longer carries spring # 354627r1.Has that number changed? Can anyone check their CDs? Its the Brake spring (in drum) for a 300U.

I see Worthington/A&I offers complete brake assys....so,separate springs wont be needed.
Might as well start off with all new parts...or as much new as possible.
