After a crappy week of overcast, 2" rain and temps in the 30's & 40's, sun will shine tomorrow and I get to exercise the old girl! Forecast for sun and late 60's in mid-Alabama! Got to get the martin gourds ready and the asparagus bed in order. Martins will be here on 2/14, mark my words, first sign of spring! Hang in there, yanks.

Heres' a web site for a martin house similar to the one that I built 40 years ago. Hal
I wouldn't use 3/4 lumber, you'll need a crane to lift it up in place.

I'm glad you're getting martins at your home. I think 1965 was the first year that we ever had them when we built a 3 tier martin house. They returned every year and soon the house was full.
Then in 1972 when a freak rain storm went through
this area, I think it was called Agnes dumped 7 to 8 inches of rain. A few days later my wife said there was something wrong in the martin house
do to a foul odor. I drop the martin house and found all the baby birds had drowned.

After that the birds would return but
would not build. I even bought 2 or 3 new martin houses and they still wouldn't build. I never got any martins after that. One of the houses is still standing today. Once you have them around you never forget them.

Have fun with that Super C I wish I had kept the one that I had. Sure did a nice job plowing. Enjoy those martins. Hal

El Toro, that's quite a report. Have you heard of that sort of thing happening else where with Martins? Just curious Dick Davis

Hi Dick, I never heard of anything happening to
the martins like what we had. That martin house was so nice. We made it in where I worked when work was slack, working on it was joint effort by my co-workers. Everyone wanted to help. I loaned the plans to a supervisor in another department so he could build a house.

I think the martin house was so tight and being 3 stories high the rain water could not drain is what caused this. I bought a fiberglass and several metal houses, but never had any birds to build nests. The early birds would arrive and look over the houses and then they left. Seems like they sensed that something had occurred here.

I still have those plans if someone
wants to build a martin house. Once you have them you won't forget them. They will make short work of the mosquitoes in your area. I mowed grass with the birds sitting on the house and they just looked down and watched. Hal

I must have disposed my original plan, but I've
found several on the Internet that are very similar and I can email these to you. The one plan is for a two story house, but you could add an additional floor like I did. It makes it hard to raise and lower when they're too large.
I left my email unblocked if you want me to email the plans to you. Hal

Here's a web site for a martin house almost identical to the one I built 40 years ago. The only difference is on mine was the roof used slats
that overlap each other. Hal
This is out in your area of the country.

I'm going to try that this Spring. I still have
a martin house that we purchased years ago. It's
a lot easier to handle compared to the wooden house that we made. It took 4 men and a boy to get that wooden house up. After I got martins I didn't put it up so high. When you're young and dumb and don't know any difference, I could've built that house so any water would've drained out. I should've drilled holes below the entrance
holes to allow any water to drain. If you want to build a martin house you can have the plans.

The early martins usually arrive here in MD in late March or early April. In 1968 we had sold the house in Feb and we didn't settle until April and those martins had arrived and were sitting on the martin house that was on a picnic table that we had. My neighbor quickly put up a house and those martins moved in.

My late dad was from western IN near the IL border. The town was called Waveland.
It's nice and warm here today up near 50 degrees. You can soon plow garden with that Super C. I liked the fast hitch since you didn't need to get off the tractor. When I made the last pass across the garden one of the hydraulic hose bursted when raising the plow. I made up 2 new hoses at work. Keep a look out for those martins. Hal
