I have an old H30 IH Payloader with a 263 gas 6 cyl engine 12V Coil and external Resistor. And I'm looking for a wiring diagram. I replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, Starter, Ammeter, plugs, points, condenser, cap, rotor, plug wires, coil, and resistor. It spits and sputters a few times then nothing. Plugs are getting wet and spark is passing through the points. I need a good diagram to see if something is wired wrong. Thanks

how is it running> to make sure your charging system is working just put a volt meter across the battery when running. should read 12 to 14 volts. you're good to go for a while.

JOSSETTE, The payloader is running just fine. I completely rewired everything. Still shows negative 3 amps on the ammeter after warmup. I replaced the Ammeter with a new one. I'll keep an eye on the battery to see if it holds a charge. If not I'll replace the alternator.
Thank you, Tom in Pa.

forgot to ask----does your key switch have 2 posts or three???

if 2 posts B and S the wire from the resis should come back the S side which goes to the push button.

3 posts. B--S--I the resis wire should go to the I post.

sorry bout that.

JOSSETTE, Its running just fine today after I followed your wiring diagram. The only thing for me to do is put the lights and instrument + wire back on. Oh the Ammeter is pegged at -15 then after warmup its -5? Thank you again for your wiring Knowledge.

make sure you run a wire from the neg post on the amp with an inline fuse (15 to 25 amp= depends on your lighting) to your light switch. then you can wire lights without burning up everything when something goes wrong.

glad to help.

have fun with it

i found the wiring diagram for generator and regulator= make sure the reg is grounded very good.

F on gen goes to f on reg

A on gen goes to A on reg

B on reg goes to positive on the amp

the way you had it wired it would spit and sputter because you had the coil resisted. two or three sparks and the resis would kick in and then nothing or very little.

take your time and NO swear words.
I do recomend 10 gauge wire for better performance.

have a good time with it

got a head of my self

you do need a wire from the resis- Alt post back to the switch B side. i do this every day you would think typing it be would the same as doing it. not really.

what i do is run 10 gauge through out the system.
solid wire works the best but the extension cords work too. you can run the cord from front to back and it has a protective sheath.

black wire from key to resis
white from pos Amp to bolt on Alt
green from relay to pos on coil
red for the hot start connections.

Thank you Jossette,I may have the Ammeter wiring reversed, I didnt know it had a + or -. Also, I"m not sure of where the wire from the starter to the resistor goes, and there is a wire from the switch to the resistor that may go on the same resistor terminal? Then out the resistor to the + of the coil. Thanks again, Tom

Yes, I have a Starter selenoid with terminals (R) and (S). The R presently goes to the push button, the S presently goes to the Resistor next to the coil. ?

the S should be start or push button
the R should go directly to the pos on the coil.

sometimes they put on a cover with opposite polarities. so if you switch those wires and it does not start then switch them back. the triangle of resistance is alt - resis-key switch-resis - coil. if you only have one resis try running a wire from the bat cable post on the relay to the switch. the wire from the resis to the switch will now go directly to the pos post on the coil. there will be 2 wires at the pos coil post now.

the resis might be. the rest should be good..

ok one more time in english.
there should be a B and an S on the key switch.
from S on key to neg on amp to push button to S on relay.

bat positive cable to big post on relay and run a 10 gauge wire back to B on key switch.

R on relay to positive on coil

pos on coil to resistor then to Alt white wire.

red Alt wire to bolt post on back of Alt and from there to the positive on the amp

good luck

JOSSETTE, I drew a diagram of your post and I forgot to mention I have an external voltage regulator mounted next to the alternator. Do you know how the wires attach to the regulator and alt? Thanks, Tom in Pa.

can you take it back and get a chevy AC delco alt?? been a long time since i did that and it seemed like the regulator went out every couple months. no diodes or anodes to keep a good even charge on the batery. cant beat technology there.

The Alternator and regulator are the only parts I havent replaced!Hope They are ok, The problem is I cant get it to run but a second or two. If I change them you are suggesting the AC Delco Alt. So, I wont need a regulator anymore?

the regulator is built-in and wired to the armature along with the diodes. this way if the battery is not charging its a $35 rebuild and no guessing what isnt working and less wiring. same Alt on any late 70 or 80s chevy small block v8 is what i use. you may have to add a lower bracket but well worth it in the end.

FROM THE SWITCH ( 2 POST SWITCH)
1 WIRE SHOULD GO TO THE NEG SIDE OF THE AMP GAUGE.
FROM THE NEG POST ON AMP 1 WIRE WILL GO TO A INLINE FUSE AND THEN TO YOUR LIGHT SWITCH.
2ND WIRE WILL GO TO THE PUSH START BUTTON AND THEN BACK TO THE BATERY POSITVE POST.3 WIRES SHOULD BE AT THE NEG AMP POST.== IF YOU HAVE A START RELAY. THE WIRE FROM AMP WILL GO TO THE POS SIDE THEN BACK UP TO THE PUSH BUTTON AND THEN BACK DOWN TO THE START SIDE OF RELAY

THE OTHER POST ON THE PUSH BUTTON WILL GO TO THE STARTER.

FROM THE POSITVE POST ON THE AMP
THE WIRE SHOULD GO ALL THE WAY TO THE BACK POST OF THE ALTERNATOR WHICH THE RED WIRE OR (2F) SIDE OF THE PLUG IN THE ALT SHOULD BE BOLTED ON.
THE WHITE WIRE OR (1R) OF THE ALT SHOULD GO TO AN ALT RESISTOR POST. THE OTHER RESIS POST GOES TO THE KEY SWITCH OPPOSITE OF THE 1ST WIRE.
RUN ANOTHER WIRE FROM THIS POST TO THE COIL RESISTOR POST( YES THERE IS A COIL RESIS TOO) THE OTHER RESIS POST GOES TO THE POSITIVE POST ON THE COIL AND THE NEG COIL POST TO THE DISTR.

GET SOME PAPER AND DRAW SOME CIRCLES WHERE EVERYTHING WILL BE AND FOLLOW THE STEPS. IF YOU HAVE ANY TROUBLE GIVE ME CALL
