My WD Allis just had its clutch go out and the tractor has too many other problems to justify fixing it. A local dealer has a Farmall 300 with a Paulson loader for $3500. More than I want to spend, but I am cheap. I think he said it is a wide front. The loader has a trip bucket, which I hate, but the local welding shop said the could make it hydralic for under $500. Is has been painted recently, but I don't know if it was mechanically restored as well. I hope to go see it tommorrow. Anyhow I use a tractor for mowing diches with a JD #9 sickle mower, raking them and baling with a JD 14T square baler. I use a 5' Brushhog mower, and move snow around the yard with a loader and a V-style snowblower. So, my question is; is a 300 gouing to be enought tractor for my needs? Is the price out of line? Thanks for any input, Scott

I looked at the tractor today. Very nice. Nice paint, new tires, 12 Volt system, but no 2 point.
The dealer said he would take $3200. I told him it was be too costly too add a 3 point, and hydralic bucket, and the tractor was over priced to begin with. I think I will be splitting my WD myself and putting in a clutch and seals. For what I can find out there locally, I am better off rebuilding what I got. For the kind of money they want for a replacement tractor, I can restore mine a lot cheaper. Thanks for all the advise and input, Scott

I agree, $4,000 for what you are getting sounds a bit steep.

At that price I just might have to consider getting into the scalping of loaders and tractors. :>) Only problem is that I'd want to fix them up first so the new owner couldn't have the fun!

something else to consider.if you are cropping the ditches that loader will add a lot of extra weight to the steering axle.could be a problem with the weight.

A 300 is a good tractor and will work fine for you. However, the price seems a little on the high side. Look it over good; sometimes dealers paint a tractor and say that it was "rebuilt."

i agree with kelly. price is a bit high. check your loader closely for welds and cracks.check your t/a for operation. check the frame rails and t/a housing areas for cracks or welds.power steering with the loader would be a plus. heavier tires on the steering axle would be a plus. are you trading the wd for it?if you are the price is pretty steep. it all comes down to what you want.the 300 will do all you chores you want to use it for.shop and compare.

300 is a real nice tractor. It should run every thing you atated with no trouble. As a matter of fact thats what they did when they were new.
Like JOSSETTE said a 400 would be nice also.
400 will burn quite a bit more fuel than a 300.
Better yet get a 300 and a 400, Thats what I did :-)
$3500 is areach though. Maybe with a wide front but it better be a jewel of a tractor for that.
$2500 seems more in line for a good running 300.

if you do you will think you had died and went to heaven compared to that wd.

My 300 with original wide front does not turn very short, not the most msnuverable loader tractor that way.

What does it have on the back, the 2pt setup does not raise very high when converted to 3pt. The first year did not have an upper link attachment, the last 2 model years did I believe.

I dont really notice any turning problems with the Swartz front on my 400.
Fast hitch with the front cylinder will lift pretty high. Not quite as high as a 3pt but good enough.
I did notice that the 3pt on my 460 wont go as low as the fast hitch. Not by a long shot.
Might just be the cheapie 3 pt on my 460 but it does not go very far lower than the regular hith.
My fast hitch will drag on the ground just about.

Hooking up balers and haybines ect is a joy with the fast hitch. Just back up to it. Lower the hitch. Back up and put the pin in. Then lift the hitch and remove the jack.
Cant do that with my 3pt. Unless I raise it higher than the hitch would be.

You wouldnt think that would be a big deal, but I have lots of equipment that I have to put on blocks. Saves loads of time.

The Schwartz wide front on my Ford 960 is great.

The original factory wide front on the 300 holds up well, but it is not a good turning unit. Dad had a mounted 4 row planter & a front mount cultivator on it, and it was very difficult to make the next 4 rows.

We tried to run a Ford 3pt mower on the back of it once, the Fast hitch is great for Fast hitch stuff, but don't like it much for real 3pt stuff. Does not have the width or range of motion needed. My experience. Mind you, I _love_ it for hooking up pin equipment and operating the side rake, which I believe was your point. :)

i would go to a 400 with the equip. you have. little more power for the bailer and brushhog.

$3500 is way to much for that even with a fresh overhaul. ask if it had been overhauled and check the hydraulics--pto-make sure you run it down the road and leave the bucket off the ground while you play the salesman. as you go home look for leaks and see if the bucket is still up. go back the next day and offer them $2500 and watch 'em pucker-up. I like doing that.
