Just gave my cub a pull down the road with the H after an engine over-haul (been seized up, frozen and given up on by more than one owner). Started right up, sounded good, but no oil presure on gauge. Pulled the gauge, no oil behind in filter chamber. Filled up the filter and added extra to well over full. Still no pumping. I havn't dropped the pan yet. I think the suction pipe is tight and sound and know the screen is clean.

Are they sometimes difficult to get primed and started?

The job to check the pump is absolutly scary! Split required. Before I get the energy to go back at her I thought I'd check with ya-all.

Thanks so much to all!!!!! Got the plug out, filled her with me oil can and yipee!!!!!lots of presure, top of the scale, stayed there even after running up to temp. for about 40 minutes. Lots of power too! This is where this forum really shines...I would of been cussin', dropping the pan, throwin' my wrenches, and maybe pushing her to the back of the shed. Instead...I'm one happy fella!!!! Again merci!

When I built the engine on my '49 cub, I vaselined the gears in the oil pump before assembly. When we tried to start it, it had no fire, but the oil pressure came up with the starter. Let it sit about a month while rebuilding the mag, went back out, it started, but no pressure. Took the allen head plug out, filled it with oil and it came right up. Had great pressure ever since(1 1/2 years) Kevin

Left side of engine towards the rear (above where the oil pump is) there is an allen screw in the flange of the casting. Remove that and fill with a pump oiler to prime the oil pump. If you can't get the plug out, if you remove the oil filter from it's housing, you will see a small hole there that can be used as well.

COOL...I'll try that before the pan is dropped. Is it common to not have the pump start without this procedure?

After a rebuild or setting a long time they often need priming. Almost always after rebuild.

Will I have to split it to see if the gears are turning?
