I just got a 560D that I traded my Johnny for. Injectors and glow plugs are good. It doesn’t move. I was told it was the pinion gear, and if I took the right brake assembly off there is a housing that pulls out to get to it? Please tell me if this is so, and if it is a day job or weekend job or hour job etc. I was told this tractor is the 1st year they came out with them 1959, is this true? The 2nd cylinder from the back has a lot of blow by; I can take the piston and shake it back and forth. It is definitely a fixer upper, but that’s what I wanted. I’m sure I will be hear a lot gathering info. Thanks everybody.

I believe the records will show that the 560 was first introduced in 1958. Th 450 ended production in 1957 with the 460 and 560 right on its heels starting in 58. First line of 6 cylinder tractors for I.H.

When you were told “pinion gear” were you told which one? There is a pinion shaft that drives the ring gear on the differential, there are also two pinion shafts that dive the “bull gears” or final drive. The one that you are referring to is the one that drives the “bull gear” on the right side. The PTO hole that Aces is referring to is where the PTO unit is bolted into the rear end of the tractor. After the PTO is removed, you can see and reach into the rear end of the tractor at least somewhat. The casting you are working on needs to have the bull gear removed from the axle and moved rearward enough to clear the part of the housing with the inside bearing for that pinion shaft.

My suggestion is to go ahead and pull the cover off the transmission/differential. It will take more time, but he work will be less frustrating since you will be working from the top rather than through a small opening. Get a shop manual to help out, and by the way, this will not be a quick deal. That way you can inspect gears, bearings, and replace any defective parts found.

Now, before you get really gun-ho, take the cover off the top of the mid section (TA) of the tractor and check the small clutch under the cover. If this clutch is shot and the TA ramp and roller clutch has failed the tractor will not move. The clutch under the cover drives the whole tractor (through the TA planetary carrier) and if it is out, then power is transmitted through the planetary gearing. If the ramp and roller (overrunning) clutch has also failed, the planetary carrier will spin backwards and the tractor will not move.

Eric 59 was the first year. As for the pinion, if it is bad you will have to pull the deck of the rear end to replace it. After you get the brake off then there is a plate with the brake shaft seal in it that can come off, then a housing for the brake shaft bearing and the pinion bearing. You can pull that housing with taking the deck off but you will have to go through the PTO hole frmove the wheel axel end cap and bush the azel out so you can move the bull gear back out of the way because the pinion housing has part of the housing behind the bull gear and if try to pull it with moving the bull gear you will brake the pinion housing. If you do pull the pinion housing you will not see much anyway. You might get some idea of the pinion buy going through the PTO. No good way to see the pinion without taking the deck off.

When you say PTO hole what do you mean? And if I take the deck off your saying I can tell if the pinoin is bad. Becouse I think thats the problem. I was told that the tractor wouldnt move with that pice broke.

He means that you need to remove the pto unit from the back of the differential housing in order to get a large enough hole to get a decent view of the pinion. The only other way to get a decent view of it is with the top cover removed.
