I ran accross the add for an M for sale in Tx. Says" This one has disc brakes." Would that make it a Super M or were some M's in 1952 Made with disc brakes? I understand that both the M and the Super M were sold that year.

Lambert had aftermarket Disc Brake kits for Ms that were sold by IH dealers. This could be what is on this M.

What does your serial number prefix say?

I have one! The serial # for the first is 294226, and i cant find the last one, but i know there was 3992 made with them. I have had some people tell me its not that rare, but to me it is!

There's a very common misperception here that I'd like to play correct police on.

"Disc Brakes are for Supers".

The addition of disc brakes to IH tractors was long in the making. Certain tractors that needed them due to lots of hard brakeing in tough conditions (orchard tractors) received them as early as 1948 in very limited circumstances. However, most models did not receive them until 1952, probably due to bugs getting worked out, prices coming down, what have you.

The addition of disc brakes to the Farmall M late in production was a normal running change, really didn't have anything to do with Super Anything. IH continually changed all of its tractors in production. Saying that some M's were built with "Super parts" really isn't correct in this case.

Now, folks over the years have come to the conclusion that the Super Ms changeover was responsible for the discs, because all the Super Ms have discs, and only a few late Ms have the discs (I should say factory discs, plenty of the aftermarkets out there). This is a case where observation doesn't quite beat parts books and factory records.

in the conversion year (52) IH used up the remaining M parts and finished the tractor(s) with super parts .....H , M , W4 , W6 (and maybe others ?) all ended up with some super parts at the end of production - i've had all 4 models with disc brakes - i've had 3 w6's with a super bellhousing & starter - i have one right now with super brakes , bell housing , starter , and lights - and i even had one with a super engine ! ..... and i have an early (6xx) 300 with SH wheels (casting dates within a couple weeks of the rest of the tractor) .....and did you know that's also why IH made the 330? they had the 340 engine built but were not tooled up for the rest of it - so they just stuck the engines in 350's and called them 330's !!..... it's this kind of "history trivia" that makes these old tractors so neat !

Everyone feel free to correct me, I like to learn. Couple of things to look at. The front of the nose cone logo. Most of the time, the Supers have an IH logo and the regulars have a Farmall logo, industrials will have International. Also, if you look at the stamp in the block, if its a 248 its and M, 264 is SM/400, and if its a 281 its a late 400 or 450. Disc brakes would make it more likely a SM, just b/c of numbers. Plus, look at where the hydraulic pumps are located. Usually an M only has a belly pump.

the early SM's had belly pumps -then in transition to the late SM's , a few had belly pumps but had the batt under the seat already --and even the late SM's could be special ordered with belly pumps (so i've been told)..... i once ran accross a 54 SMD with a belly pump (i shoulda bt that one! - i believe the 54 SM's are worth even more nowdays than the SMTA's ?? )

Ya, I think that most of the '54 SM's were Louisville. Pretty low production number.

Some of the last M's did indeed have disc brakes from factory. I know someone out there knows the serial number where that took place, but I have no idea. They were some of the 1952 tractors only. There were without a doubt M's with disc brakes, the ones at the end standard, but supposedly they were optional since 1946 or something like that. A disc braked M makes it much more special than all the other M's, just because from 1939-1952 the M didn't have much variation besides the brakes. Good luck.

I don"t think any Ms had disc brakes unless they were added afterwords. Believe there were conversion setups to add disc breaks to Ms

Some of the later model M's came from factory with disk brakes. We just bought one from a neighbor that got his M new in 52 and it came with disk brakes noot band brakes. The ones on the M did not use as manny bolts in the cover as the SM did.

That's the neat thing about these old girls. During the last 50+ years things have been swapped around, redone, bolted together, improved, retro fitted, add on to, and otherwise modified by every owner so that their linage becomes a mystery to be solved by us. My nickel Dick Davis
