Hi guys Does anyone know what the little pipe that sticks down inside the oil pan does? Does it screw in to the block or push in. Out of the two motors I tore down one was already broke from Ice I guess and I dropped the other motor on the gravel when it got the best of me. SOOOOO O I guess I may be looking for one from one of you good ol boys if its needed I guess. The machine shop called tonight. Block is good, New Cam Bushing going in tomorow and Crank shaft getting a nother 10 thous off her for a total of 20 all together. I am getting siked. Any body know anything else I should have them do. Like press the sleeves in or give her a shave or anything?

The tube indeed is the oil return pipe. It is threaded for 1/8" pipe. Get a 6" black nipple (NOT galvanized) at your favorite plumbing supply and cut to length. By length, make sure it extends past the bottom of the block but doesn't interfere with the shallow part of the pan. The only reason I can think of for it being there is so that oil can return to the sump a little more directly.

When you get your block back make sure all oil passages are clear and clean. This includes the one drilled up the front main bearing cap bolt hole, main gallery, and rocker supply. I was surprised to see what came out of the block of my H after being dipped.

My favorite rebuilding upgrades were a gas head, high compression (6.5:1!) pistons, and having the cam reground for 0.240" lift. Made my '40 into a new tractor.

Magman I just finished rebuilding an H this year.I'm not sure what the tube is for but if I remember correctly it just screws into the bottom of the block. The one thing I ran into when I rebuilt the engine was, I took the studs out of the block to plane the deck of the block and I did not notice that five of the studs where longer than the rest. Make sure they go back in the correct spot.Two where on the leftside near the back for the [throttle bracket] and three where in the center of the block because there where washers underneath the nuts. It's a fun project allyou need is patience. Dale

The tube is the oil return from the filter...it is treaded and should screw out very easily. Take it out before having the block cleaned. You've turned the crank, so there will be new bearings. New rod bearings also. You've replaced the cam bearings and don't forget to have it polished. Replace sleeves and pistons and rings, wrist pins and bushings. Have the head shaved to true it up. Replace the flat head pistons with the 3 and 7/16" dome top pistons. (Requiring the thin wall sleeves) New valves and seals, springs and keepers. All seals and gaskets.... and that should about do it....about 800 buck later...now it's time for new paint.

I don't know Jon but when you get done you can come out and help me pump $$$$$$$$ into mine. The head I had saved back needs seats and guides so I grabbed another head, now it looks like at least hone the cylinders and replace rings. This is in a motor that was supposedly "overhauled" when I bought it. And yes, I am going to put in the extra long axels but the bearings are bad in them too. I can just see the wheels in the cash register turning.

Sure, just put diesel injectors in the spark plug holes and turn it into an HD ! That way you don't have to find someone to work on that pesky magneto!
