Your dad has lots of people to talk to, Norloos's, and other beet guys, in lambton county. And for your question about grow haul deal, i went haulin out of the dover yard with my uncle, took 2 loads to Croswell michigan, It was alot of fun. Them things are HEAVY, the loader put 3000 LB's to much in, so went to the end of the pile and dropped some off, maybe 10 wheel barrow loads or not even and we unloaded more than 3000.

Why don't you talk to your neighbors and other farmers in your area that grow them? They will know alot more then you will find out here. The only issue on this site here is regionalization. What works in your county usually only works in your county. Ask them the returns, yields, sprays, etc.. I'm sure they'll be straight with you, just like the fella's here. In yesterdays Voice of the Farmer paper, an article stated that the warm weather we had in January, caused the piles to heat up. You know the company won't be eating that lost. Hound

Were abouts in Ontario do ya live? I live in ridgetown about an hour west of london. I read that article, My uncle said they try and find the hot spots and get the bad ones out and get the good ones spread out. If you saw the size of the piles then you would see why they heat up!

Hi Hound,

I think ol' FM and I are separated by a common language. :>)

I've just never heard of someone "buying some beets". So I take it, we are talking of the buying and selling of market futures here?

Darned if I know. :>(

Allan

In Ontario, we have supply management on certain crops and livestock. Basically, you pay, (apparently) $650/acre to grow a certain quantity of sugarbeets, this is called quota. This is suppose to regulate the industry. This limits the amount of growers and for this price, they have a limited, exclusive market share. So the processors, are only suppose to buy from quota holders and vise versa. After an abundant growing year, the farmers amount of lbs that their quota might be good for, is reduced or after a poor growing year, increased. Prices may also be locked in. This regulates the market. This is a whole nother can of worms, we don't want to go there. This also includes chickens, turkeys, tobacco to name a few products. Hound

for sugarbeets, you have to buys 'shares' in Michigan Sugar. Each share allows the owner to grow one acre of sugarbeets. is that clearer?

The farmers in the red river valley(minnesota/ north dakota) seem to do well, but it is sure isn't stress free crop.. check out crystal sugar's website.

What don't you understand?
In Canada, a share is worth about $650. That is 'quota' for on acre of sugar beets. Than the price per tonne is good. For ppl in Canada, sugar beets are profitable. Still don't understand something?

I didn't understand either. Things are different in the USA & Canada. Heck, 1/2 the time don't understand Allan either, and he is only a few states away.

Couldn't understand why you wanted to buy raw sugar beets! So you want to buy some shares, not beets, eh?
