I should probably know this, but I dont. Most of the wheel tractors & alied equipment I've been around, have & use the 540 rpm PTO. I have seen some tractors with dual PTO's ( 540 & 1000 rpm) & my TD-5 has a 1000rpm PTO. What was driven off these 1000rpm PTO's??.
On this subject, The TD-5 could be had with an optional bolt on PTO reducer attachment (to give 540). My parts book doesn't list a # for the complete assembly( says order as a machine attachment) but the casing PT# is 636186R1.Does anyone know was this attachment available on any other IHC AG tractors & crossed over for use on these crawlers. I was thinking of maybe trying to hunt one down if the price was right.
Thanks, Doug

Thanks for the feed back guys, my education continues
My thinking was, seeing that the 3point hitch option that was offered for these crawlers crossed over from the B275 tractor, then maybe the optional speed reducer was also a cross-over from the farm tractors, & if so what models?

Doug: I think that crawler is a bit of a mixture. I haven't looked at them in detail for years, but as I remember the engine is British and the balance is American. PTO and transmission are 340 technology. Just what 3 point fits in there I'm not sure. Those were built at Hamilton ON, using the US built 340 crawler and the British built 275 - 414 diesel engine.

I used a 1000 RPM pump on my sprayer and for the hydraulic pump that powered the air pressure unit on my IH 800 cyclo planter. On both, the higher RPM provided higher output and mid to lower engine RPM when turning around etc.

This is in addition to the other posts...

Hi, several years ago one of my Dad's neighbors had a TD-5 that he used in the woods all winter hauling logs and then in the summer time he had a 1000 RPM belt pulley on it to run his small sawmill.

You've got to be careful with one of those 1000rpm to 540 adapters: Your implement will be turning 540 with tractor at half throttle (or less). You could forget & rev her up & throw your rotary mower blades back to town!

540 rpm PTO implements usually have lower power requirements. Small balers, grinder/mixers, swathers, mower conditioners, etc. 1000 rpm PTO implements usually have higher power requirements, forage harvestors, combines etc. With the higher speed they can do the speed reduction and torque multiplcation within the implement. This means drivelines, U-joints etc. can be built smaller to do the same work. I worked for a JD dealership up til two years ago, and when dynoing a tractor I would always see about 3% lower HP readings at the same engine speed when running at 540 RPM as opposed to 1000 RPM. Deere says to expect the loss due to the extra gearing they use to get the further speed reduction from the rated engine RPM. If you have enough power for the job you can just but a 1000-540 spline adapter.

Ment to say, I you have the power running the engine at the speed that will deliver 540 rpm out the 1000 rpm stub shaft.

Hi Doug,

The old 540 PTO speed was used on the smaller equipment.

When the implements started being manufactured for the 80-100 & up horse tractors, the 540 drive lines just could not stand the heat in the kitchen. That's when the heaver 1000PTO equipment came into being.

Boy, I just don't think it is a good idea to "convert" from one speed to the other. I've done it on a NH3 nurse pump, but that really wasn't pulling much of a load, just volume of gas.

Allan
