W-30 rod bearings (inserts??)

I have a W-30 that has a knock in it that I suspect is in the lower end. Can't hear while running w/o load but when loaded, knock is obvious. I have not had pan off yet. Do W-30s have rod bearing inserts? Somewhere I ran across some post about them being made from Babbit that was poured in and then machined to dimension. Can anyone tell me if they are inserts I can buy and put in or if I need to take the rod in to have babbit put in and machined.--Erik

Could it possibly be timing causing the engine to "ping" or knock slightly?

captaink---I'm pretty sure it's a knock. Pinging a pre-ignition I am familiar with is more of a rattle or light clatter sometimes like piston slap. This is a deeper knocking noise but not so bad like some cars I've heard

When rods go on my old Farmalls( I have noticed ) They will knock when backing off a load as aposed to leaning into a load. It has been several tractors ago and many years since I've had the lower end off of a W-30. (I'll be tearing into a F30 this summer). I believe the one I worked on had inserts.. DO you have a owners or parts manual? . Now it could be that the crank is slipping forward and back and hitting the pan. I have had that happen on a 300U as the mains went bad. Fine when idle but when pulling the crank slid enough to allow the pan to come in contact. Regardless it is an easy job to get at the rod ends and check clearence. At one time I had one F30 W30 rod bearing (insert)that came with some auction stuff (Iwas told that it was f30). I'll look for it. Doubt if it is around though.

Hi Bill,

Just had to go look up the crank in those things. They must have weighed a ton!

One huge bearing on each end. Whodda thunk it?

Same with that 22-36 or all those old standards. They are beefy as are the heads. The main bearings were guarenteed for life(huge). Once dropped that 22-36 head on cold fingers trying to remove it myself. I hurt for a month.

The rod bearings are inserts, and they can be taken up by removing shims (crank may be too worn). The mains on the W30 are Ball Bearings, so you may have a bearing going bad also (usually sounds like a loud growl)

Hi Erik,

Don't have a clue about the inserts vs babbit thing; Cowman, Sloroll or someone will surely jump in here and enlighten us.

But, if it is knocking under load, I'd almost bet the problem is at a main rather than a rod. A loose rod is gonna talk, loaded or not.
