I have a 1946 H. How do I tell for sure what carburetor I have. The number on the side is 6212DB. It looks like the rest of the ones I've seen. I have a terrible time starting this tractor and always have. More so when it's cold.So I want to rebuilt the carb. Is it difficult to do?.And where is the best place to a rebuilt kit. Any ideas would be a help.
Thanks!

Before you go to far why not check that the choke is working properly.Takethe air intake hose off and try chokeing it by hand ..

darrell-r:

The6212db is just a generic casting #. There are only two carbs made for the H. You will find the part # on a brass tag close to where the governor linkage bolts up to the throttle. The two numbers are #45108DD for distillate and #59018DC for gas engines.

The carb. off my 1948 H has the number 50981DB on the little round brass plate. Could it be the wrong one?

You are running on gasoline, so either is fine, if your chassis serial has an X1 after it, that means gasoline engine, so it came with a gas carb, if there is some other suffix, or none, it came with a kerosene/distillate carb. Either way I wouldn't change it.

Shepherd-Bill, I didn't answer your question. Your carb is correct--the suffixes go DA, DB, DC, etc, the B and C or modifications during the time IH produced the carb--such modifications are usually minor, and probably don't affect performance, doubt if anyone can say that a DC makes the tractor run better than a DA.

When you rebuild it, take ALL the jets out. Be sure the float level is correct and not dragging on the bowl side.
Look carefully at the throttle & choke plates to see if they are properly centered and can close completely.
Have you checked valve clearances?
As others mentioned, ignition problems can act like carburetor troubles; be sure you have a strong spark at the right time & the H will start right up.

CHECK TIMING AND ALL ELECTRICAL FIRST. PLUGS -WIRES- AND MAKE SURE THE DISTRIBUTOR IS TIGHT. A LOT OF THEM ARE WORN OUT ON THE IN SIDE. CARQUEST OR NAPA SHOULD HAVE IT.

When I rebuilt the carb on my H, I got a kit from the IH dealer, and one from Tractor Supply. What one didn't have, the other one did.
The IH kit had better quality stuff, but some minor parts were missing. ken
