Hello, I have a 674 diesel with water in the oil. Today I got under it and lowered the pan and put 12 lbs pressure on the cooling system to try and find the cause. I couldn't see any gaping leaks but could see slight drips at the bottom of the sleeves. I suspect the o-rings at the bottom of the sleeves. I don't want to put a bunch of money in it right now. I was wondering if the o-rings could be bought as a seperate item or if I had to buy a whole sleeve kit. Thanks for any advice. YC

Hi, the O ring are sold separately. It have a groove in the engine block for the o ring. Those engine have a (cavitation) problem and with the years, the Oring leak. If it have pitting points on the sleeve, where the O ring seal, change all the sleeve. You may try with new O ring and Permatex Ultra Black sealer, but it's so so!!! If you can not find just the seals locally send an email to mabush@freenet.de to see if they may have them. Hal

Hi about 15 years ago the "O" rings could be bought separately. You can run with the radiator cap loose so that the pressure does not build up in the coolant forcing it past the "O" rings.

The "O" rings will leak more in the cold weather as they shrink. Was the engine overheated at one time ?

Good luck

Thanks. The tractor could have been over heated. I have only had it a couple of months. Would a crack in the head or block be obvious with 12lbs of pressure on the cooling system? I would think a crack on a cold engine with that much pressure would show up in a steady drip of coolant into the crankcase. I hate to do a bunch of work on sleeves if the block or head is cracked.

Hi about 15 years ago my Dad was ploughing with his 454D and the fan belt broke, by the time he made it back to the machine shed the temp guage was in the red. To make a long story short when the weather turned cold that fall it started leaking coolant into the crankcase. The local IH dealer told him that it is was a common problem with the older model German Diesels. The 454 has a 3cyl D179 version of the D239 engine in the 674.

I would suspect that it is the "O" rings that are leaking.

BTW my Dad had the "O" rings replaced in the 454 and it is still running great with over 15,000 Hrs on it.

Good luck
