I need to sell a tractor my father aquired. Is in Santa Barbara CA. The grill says IH. The side panel says McCormick Farmall. Another plate says 340 Deisel, Serial No plate says 6420 S - Y. Transmission # is 367050R1F, Block # is 308404R1. Painted green over red, green flaking off. Seat is desintigrating. My father said the compression was low and to start it he said he had to remove the glow plugs and squirt oil in seal the rings to start it. I was going to start it but didn't have a manual, I ordered a copy of the manual from this web site but then never got around to starting it. The fuel tank had a leak, I suppose from rust? he fiberglassed over it or surrounded it with a fiber glass tank or something. Otherwise it is original. Any ideas on its value or what I could get on it? Also, what's the best way to sell it? I also have some diskers and something with short spikes that rotate down to comb the earth, someone told me what they are but I forgot the name. Any info would be helpful.

Here's a picture of the one I finished restoring last spring after a complete rebuild.
In the basic description you provided, it will take a lot of money and time to get it into decent shape to use. They are a handy size tractor. Does it have a wide front end or tricyle front? (Two wheels close together). 340's were built from '59 to '63. Yours is a 1961 model as that is the first year for the diesel engines to be used in that model. Does it have a fast hitch (Two point) or 3pt hitch? Your engine is an IH D166 engine with most likely a Roosa Master injector pump.

These had the IH D166 engine. The D188 came out in the next generation 504 Diesels. The bore remained the same but stroke was lengthened to achieve the few more Cubes. They are rather rare with only a few under 600 340D's ever built. Too new to be old and too old to be new, parts were quite hard to come by for the rebuild.

Good job restoring that 340. It couldn't have looked that good in the showroom 44 years ago.

Look to left of discussion group display and you will see "classified" and "photo ads". You could look at the photo ads archieves and see if a comparable tractor has sold in past (for value).
