I have had lots of problems trying to adjust point gap and timing. the book settings just do not work. Are the solid state or pointless kits available for this 281 engine?

Sounds like your distributor is wore out. The bushings and shaft are probobly so loose and flop around that it won't run right. The kits that your looking for, you should be able to get from Ag Parts or Hy Capacity.

I forgot to mention the distributor bushings are in good shape. Its just that the point gap is so very critical and hard to get to the sweet spot. thanks for responding.

It is not that hard to set them even with my old eyes just get the cam set in the middel of the points ware pad and set them to a light pull as to where the points don't move when you pull the feeler gauge out then lub the ware pad with some grease all done then set the timming and check you machanical adv. to make sure it is doing it's job. And when was the last time you adjusted the valves??? I get them old gasser running like a singer sewen machine .

I finally got lucky and got the points and timing set right with trial and error. It lasted about 40 engine hrs. Now it doesn't have any power and with any load at all will start backfiring out of the exhaust, louder than firecrackers. It ldles fine. The distributor looks good and I set point gap at .020 with the distributor out to make sure it was right. Do these 291 engines have a timing chain that could be causing the problem, If so how would I check it out? It is eating my lunch right now.
