It will not hit the ring gear because the flywheel on MD is smaller.

Flywheel ring gears are same for MD,SMD,450D. Differance is MD and early SMD clutch housings where starter bolts on is longer distance out from crankshaft center line. When stage 2 SMD started being produced the distance
from center line to starter bolt up on clutch housings was made the same as 450D. Stage 2 SM,use
same clutch housings on gas and Diesel Tractors. Also SMTAD,400,450 use same clutch housing Gas or Diesel

Never tried it,but think if you have clutch housing # 9122-D which is standard for MD the 400
starter drive teeth are going to end up to far out from ring gear to last very long.I mean the
gear teeth won't mesh deep enough togeather.

It will bolt in, but it has a solenoid on it so you would have to change the start switch.
