i am putting my engine back together. the crank was cut 0.10, i put 0.10 bearings in. everything is tightned to specs. how hard or easy should it be to turn the crank by hand after i torque the head down?

just read 'After I torque the head down" did not gitt that part, it will make a difference iff'n the plugs are in'it.

It should turn easy, very easy before enny seals front or rear or attached to it. I would loosen up main caps one at a time and if that made enny difference I would remove the shaft, when you install the haft bear'n shells in the block and then lay the shaft in them it should turn free with no bind'n and as you install the main caps they should make VERY little difference in how it turns unless one has the rear seal in it a neopream seal then would cause almost no drag if it has oil on it, a roop seal is very different cuzz it is pressed tight to the shaft. Their is a clearance spec for a reason, the crank needs oil between the bear'n and crank or it will take out the bear'n

When I did my C123 engine (my first one), I ran into the same sort of question. After I had tightened down the bearing caps to spec, the crank was really hard to move. After a lot of experimentation (alternately torquing down all the caps except one), I found that it was one particular cap that really stiffened things up. As it turned out, I had the cap on reversed -- the number that was stamped on the side was really faint, and just got it on the wrong way. I flipped it over, and the crank was immediately easier to turn.

It does take more effort to get the crank turning once you've got the pistons in.

In another rookie mistake, I put a piston in the wrong direction too! Luckily I caught that one before I cranked the engine over. I felt pretty stupid when I flipped the block over and saw all the arrows pointing forward except one.

yes, i oiled everything as i put it together. i can turn it by hand, but with a little effort. it's my first time putting an engine back together that will actually have to work!

Not sure exactly what you mean by "turn it by hand" but if you can turn it just by grabbing the front pulley or flywheel whith your hands that is good. You don't have to worry about it being too tight.

In steps, with just the crank in the engine it should take a pretty good “bump” with your hand to get it rolling but little effort to keep it going. As you add camshaft, pistons, etc it should get steadily harder to turn over. Putting the head on with the spark plugs out shouldn’t add a lot of resistance, just enough to push a few valve springs down. You should be able to turn it over by hand with the crank once it is in the tractor. If you can’t I’d start looking for a problem.

By, what you are telling me it sounds like you have taken the proper steps to adjusting it and should be able to turn it by hand with little effort. i an restoring a farmall 350 and just finished up with that proceduer and it works and runs fine, if that dosent correct the problem I would start looking else were.

I always plastigage the bearings upon reassembly to make sure everything is OK.

You may have a tight thrust bearing.

Some times they can be real tight and some aren't. I've put engines togeather so tight you could not turn them by hand but they ran great, but those where car engines. A big thing is to have all the rod/main bearing covered with oil,stp etc before installing them
