Where should a person start looking for a set of used tractor tire chains? I was looking at prices for new ones and I don't want to spend that much. I know I need to get my tire size.
I don't have any idea where to start looking.

Another idea would be to post a wanted ad, either here or even better in your local paper or other local classifieds(radio, online, etc.). Before we got four wheel drive tractors, we had a set of chains for every tractor on the place. Now most of those tractors are either gone or not used in the winter. Those chains are still hanging on the wall where they were left years ago(sorry, not for sale). I'd bet alot of places in your area would have old sets of chains laying around they don't use anymore.

Randy: Like old, I went to a company with a grader. Trucking companies who use chains will be the same. These guys encounter speed thus when chains start breaking a lot they just go for new ones. Most of them have a pile of chains in corner. Company I bought from charged me $20. for 3 chains, and loaned me their tool for changing cross chains. I built a pair of chains for Farmall 130. That was 10-12 years ago and I still have a 5 gallon bucket full of spare cross chains and pieces of side chain.

Farm auctions are just about the only place I know of where you might find used tire chains. You may run across a set listed in the classifieds, but before you act on that you need to find out what the shipping costs will be. Unless they are close to where you live, you will be better off buying new.

I went to the road dept in my local county and got a few sets of chains that they stopped useing on there graders and then made a set the size I needed from them. I think I payed some where around $10-20 for 2 or 3 sets. Then I just spliced them with quick links and cut them to length.
