WOW! thats the phrase in my mind this afternoon. I have a real nice 706 gas that is in real good shape, but the engine was tired, so, I tore it down this morning. It had a small tap in the engine when it ran, did not use it much, just cause of that reason. Found out why it tapped. Sleeves were so badly worn, 4 out of 6 cyls, top 2 rings were broke, and all 6 pistons were cracked on the skirts! Sure glad I did not run that motor just yet, would have been disaterous if she let loose. I noticed 3 sleeves, on the distributor side of the engine, had a small chip out of them, at the base of the block. and they had knurled the piston skirts once before I had it. The rod bearings looked ok, couple of scratches on the surface of the insert, all seemed to have the same wear pattern on the bearing insert,,,, wondering if the broken pistons combined with the worn sleeves, caused the bearing scratches due to the excess movement. So, Im going to spec the rod journals make sure they are good to use. (I hope so) funny thing is,, the hour meter reads 2400 hrs, and still works. Wonder why such a low hour engine had so much damage? ran out of oil at one point? overheated, who knows? LOL anyways, Sure is a nice ol 706, a nice loader needs to find its way on this machine. Im looking for a sleeve puller, or to build one to work. Anyone have one to rent, or sell, or have blueprints to make one? Where do I find a new sleeve puller? is it worth the $$??? Any info would be great! Thanks! ChadS

as for me , well i just take the arc welder and some 7018 at around 90 amps and run some stringers up the sleeves and pull them out by hand but ya don't want to penatrate just sort of a build up weld and it shrinks the sleeves . Now that ya have it down if it is a 263 i would make it a 291 with the upgrade sleeve set but you will have to bore the block and while your going that far have the deck plained just enough to flaten it out . Oh yea make sure that you get atleast .004 skirt to wall clearance and don't work it hard for atleast 50 hours and use 93 octain gas . I have done many 706 gassers and learned the hard way on a couple.

You can make your own sleeve puller for cheap. The sleeve puller disc needs to be a stepped disc to really work good. Then it will center in the cylinder nice and pull straight. Buy a new sleeve set and take one of the sleeves to your local machine shop and have them machine a stepped disc to fit the sleeve. .10 under for the inside step should be about right. Have them drill a hole exactly in the center of the disc to fit a bolt. The hole should be at least 5/8". 3/4" would be even better. The puller part that rests on the top of the block (puller bolt goes through this too) can be easily made from a few pieces of scrap metal. Good Luck!
