I guess the question is how much is too much? Bushings in the rockers are visibly worn, likely over the recommended 0.003 clearance, but I don't have the proper tool to measure (will probably take it and have it measured). Any one know a source for a complete new or rebuilt rocker assembly? (IH 460 gas)--used ones are likely no better than what I have. All the usual internet places I have checked don't list one. Case-IH has most of the individual components, but that's an expensive way to fix it. Thanks for your help.

There's a man in KY that rebuilds IH parts. His name is Percy Brandon and his number is 270-388-2510. I do not know if he does rocker arms and I do not have an email for him.

You could give Draper Tractor parts a call at 1-800-967-8185 and their email is parts@drapertractor.com. They wanted $125.00
for a used rocker. You may be better off having
your machine shop do the work. Then you will be sure of having it repaired like new. Hal

You are traveling the same path I did on my B.
Nearly every part was replaced or refurbished. I was very happy with the end result. So was the guy who bought it from me years later. The rocker shafts were badly worn. Surprisingly, the rockers were not. I had to buy the new shafts from IH, something over $100. The machine shop dressed the tips of the rockers where they contact the valves but did not have to bush them. If yours need to be bushed, I think you may make out better at the shop. What did you pay to bush your rods? Should be similar or less per bushing even if they have to make the bushings. They may be willing to cut you a break given all the work you have provided them.

Any chance the rocker arms or bushings are the same as a truck engine? If so, maybe Federal Mogul or a similar outfit would have the bushings at a more reasonable price, or maybe even the whole rocker arms?

CNKS, Even if you dont have inside and outside micrometer, you could still use feeler stock to get an idea what amount of clearance you do have to get an idea. My 2cents.

Will have to purchase another feeler gage, mine are too wide.

CNKS, Yes, I should have mentioned that they need to be thin. When they are that thickness you can cut them easily with regular sissors. At least that will give you an idea what you have.

I've been curious about this myself, if only I owned a good lathe. I think I could make some bushings for the rockers or maybe even build up and turn down the shaft to get everything back in specs again. Is there a good machine shop in your area? How about a tech school? This would be a very good project for students at a mechanical technology school.

I'm currently having the crank and rod (piston pin) bushings done at a machine shop, just looked at the rockers yesterday, so I haven't asked the machine shop about it. I will do that. The rocker bushings are replacable, I think, but IH does not list that as a separate part, but sells the rocker and bushing for about $30 each ($360 for 12), and shafts for $115 each (the 460 rocker shaft is two piece. So, unless the bushings are available somewhere, they have to be made -- I imagine it would be cheaper to replace the whole assembly, if I could find one. Or since it still works, I could leave it alone, except that the whole engine have new or rebuilt parts, including the cam -- seems there's no place to stop (except when I'm broke.

It does get pricey real quick. Look at it this way, if you do it right the first time, you will probably not have to do it again, and you will have one sweet running tractor for a very long time.
