I recently replaced the pressure plate, clutch disc and throw-out bearing. In addition I replaced the bearings in the transmission. After this, whenever you start the engine and shift the transmission in any gear the gears grind. I did notice that the oil slinger gear was not installed. I went to my tractor supply but and told that it was not necessary to have this gear installed and no replacement was available. I have checked several other same type transmissions and they did not grind the gears whenever you shifted into gear. Anybody have an idea what might be causing this problem?
Thanks

The early B did not have a slinger gear. Yours may have never had one.

You should have changed the pilot bearing in the crankshaft. I had one not to long ago that had a bad pilot bearing and the shaft drug when the clutch was depressed and wouldnt stop rotation. Replaced pilot bearing and problem went away.

I’ll state the obvious first, that being that the reason the gears are grinding is that the gears are still moving. Why they are moving is the question. Did you check to make sure that the clutch fingers are set correctly, and the clutch is adjusted properly. Does the clutch disengage or is it “dragging” a little bit. Any drag on the clutch will keep the top shaft in the transmission spinning, causing the gears to grind. If the clutch is dragging any at all that is where your problem is.

The slinger gear that you mention is needed only if the tractor is stationary and the PTO is in use. That slinger gear runs in the transmission oil and thus would add resistance to help stop the shaft when the clutch is depressed. That means that it will take longer for the transmission top shaft to stop rotating than it would if the gear was in place. My B takes some time for the gears to stop which can be quite annoying.
