Hello and thank you Hugh,It is a farmall 504 instead of a 540.It seems to run excellent once I got the old gas out and rebuilt the distributor but the lift seems like it is low on fluid and the power steering only works occasianally.I want to change out the fluid but I an not sure where it goes.

Dale: Drain it as best you can, change that filter on right side of torque tube. Fill with new Hy tran fluid. 06 and 56 series tractors had a dip stick in fill pipe right on platform ahead of seat. That 504 probably still uses fill to level plugs with a fill cover just opposite gear shift.

One thing I have found with Farmalls from that era, (1958 to 1968) hydraulics work much better and you will have far less long term trouble if you run that transmission about 3/4" above the full mark. Note I said transmission, don't try it with engine crankcase

The hydraulic fluid goes in the transmission case, just like every Farmall/International tractor made in the USA after 1958. You will find a plug on the bottom of the transmission, and one on the side to check the level. There should also be an access panel on the side of the torque tube between the engine and transmission. You'll find the hydraulic filter under this panel.

Are you sure of that number 540, 504 sounds more reasonable. Cockshutt had a 540, Deere had a 540 forestry skidder but I don't recall IH using that number.
