My early SA (250551) is gettings the head re-built, new rod & main brgs, and new sleeves & pistons. I'm about ready to buy a sleeve set from Darin's. They sell an oversized set with 3-1/8" aluminum pistons. This tractor still had the original 3" flat top pistons. Will this bigger set work OK in my old tractor? Also, is there any need silicone or seal the top lip of the sleeve when seating it into the top of the block?

Never put any sealant in the counterbores while installing new wet liners. Slide the liners in the block without the lower sealing rings and check fit before final installation. The head gasket will seal the top of the liners. If you were to put anything between the liner flange and the block I would be scared of it moving with the heat cycles of the engine and losing the clamping force of the head gasket on the liner flange.

I bought my sleeve kit from IH for a Farmall A and
it came with 3 1/8" pistons. No problem with the fit. The worst problem was cleaning the area in the block where the seals (doughnuts) sit. You need to make sure this area is very clean so there's no leakage into the crankcase.

Even if you have the block cooked inspect this area for any rust scale. I smeared the sleeve
end with dish detergent so it will slide into the
seal easily. My A had a 16-inch moldboard plow that came with the tractor and it would pull that
plow very good except when it was in sod and it would slip some then. I never used any sealant
on the sleeves at the top. Never had any leakage
around the head . I did retorque the head after getting the engine running and heated up. Hal

I got my kit from IH. Take an old sleeve with you to get the right kit.

The big thing when changing the sleeves is that you get the right sleeve's. The sleeve in a Super block can be a different size on the bottom where the seal oil ring sets. One is a 3 5/16 and the other is a 3 7/16. This is the measurement at the bottom of the block where the sleeve goes thru.
Hope I help some.
