On the C169 (300U) distributor mounting base with tach drive, what lubrication should be applied to the gears inside (the dist shaft and tach plastic pinion)? Or should it be kept dry until it fills with oil? Looks like there is an open oil hole that fills the housing up and keeps it lubed. Also, the tach drive pinion has no o ring on its shaft (its plastic and has no groove for one),if this housing fills with oil, wont that gear leak oil and fill the tach cable up? Or was that the original idea?

I beleve there is no difference between the tach drive and the reg . You pull the plug put a greese fitting in there and give her a few shots of good quality greese ever 100 hours or maybe less I cant remmmber its in the IT manual it might be 50 or even less. There are two plugs too do this too. JON

Yes,I see its in the 300U operators manual. Those plugs are supposed to be replaced with grease fittings and given a couple pumps of grease.50 years later the screws are still there....no grease fittings installed.Dont know why IH never put zerks there if they wanted them greased.

My interpretation of the instructions is to install grease fittings temporarily, and replace the plugs after greasing. This prevents overgreasing by some idiot with nothing better to do.

They probably omitted the zerks because some people have trouble understanding the difference between "a couple of shots every 50 hours", and "let's pump grease in every day until it comes out somewhere".

You're exactly right. I'd say that two shots per year is the right amount.
