I thought I had a lot of play in the steering shaft of my restoration project H.I replaced the bushing and seal at the front of the worm shaft.
But there is a significant amount of play where the worm shaft passes through the "center bearing". My worm shaft shows a lot of wear where it rotates in this part. But the center bearing is NOT a bearing it is just a cast piece. No bushing, no seal, no bearing. The shaft is worn a lot on the bottom side from turning in this support. If you grab the shaft and pull it back and forth there is a LOT of play there. Now do I weld up the shaft to replace the worn metal, bush the "bearing" piece, or just allow all that play in the center support "bearing"?

If you want to fix the shaft, buy a used one.

Excessive play that far from the worm gear is not going to give you much steering slop, however. For that, if the worm gear bearing is OK, check the upper and lower bolster bearings.

Gordo: Although I have an H, I don't have the parts manual. I DO have 2 M's, and I DO have the parts manual for them and they do show a bushing for the center support. As far as the M's go, I've not had to replace one yet. Maybe you can call an IH dealer to see if one was made for an H. Randy

Looking at the illustrated parts breakdown (IPB) there is a seal and bushing pictured. They are located very near the center bearing. But in reality they are meant to slide all the way down the shaft and fit into the upper bolster housing. I ordered them thinking they went into the center bearing.
There SHOULD have been bushing and seal just like that for the center bearing. I'm off to the local machine shop today to get a bushing made for that center bearing, but as someone said it still has to be ID same as largest od of the shaft and will not solve the problrm of the worn down area of the shaft

I had a similar problem yesterday with cub. I filled the gap with babbit. Heated all parts with a oxy/ac torch, temporarily sealed the gaps with bent steel rod, melted the lead/zink and poured the babbit into the gap. After it cooled I filed it smooth, drilled/taped the oil-hole to take a greese fitting. I did the same on my square baler plunger arm 4,000 bales ago and it still ok.

I have a similar condition with my H. I'm not sure what the answer is, but I'm considering having a bushing put in. The problem here is the existing wear in the shaft. The bushing would need to be reamed to accommodate the largest shaft diameter, so even with the new bushing you will get some play. The best solution may be to have the shaft welded up and turned down to the correct size and then insert a brass bushing. Sounds expensive to me.
