I've been pulling an 18 ft 10,000 pound bumper-pull since 1995 and love it. But I would like a 24 ft gooseneck to pull with the new Dodge. The thing is I only have the 5.7 Hemi and want something that pulls easy. I realy like the looks of this trailer but it is built on an 8 inch I beam when others are built on a 12 inch beam. I know it is still heavier than the trailer I am pulling now but is it heavy enough to haul a 10,000 pound tractor? or maybe more on a short trip? I tried my 86 Hydro with loader on the trailer I have now and he don't cut it. What I want is to be able to haul the 560 wheatland to shows and or be able to haul two smaller tractors. I like the idea of keeping the deck height low and want a short dovetail and slide-out ramps. Also I am going to insist on 10 ply tires. Any thoughts?

Your brakes should be fine if you have good brakes on both axles. Adjust trailer brakes where they will stop the load and go for it.Bill

Cowman,

I have a F-250 Ford extended cab with a powerstroke and 5-speed manual trans. I loaded my Case ck680 backhoe (the book says it weighs about 13,000 lbs) onto a 24 ft gooseneck trailer with two 7,000 lb axles. I have hauled this up to 85 miles one way and run about 60 mph with no problems. Other posts are correct that the combined rating of the axles is 14,000 lbs and the trailer weight must be included. A lot has to do with where the ball is placed on the tow vehicle. I have mine about 8 and a half inches in front of the rear axle of the pickup. This allows me to transfer a lot of weight to the tow vehicle even onto the front axle. Believe it or not, I can scale that trailer and tow vehicle loaded and be under all the axle weight ratings, but am right at the Load range E tire weight ratings.

Take into consideration what you will be hauling and how far. Heavy trailers are better built, but the trade off is they cost more, weigh more, and have more tires to keep up.

I would go with the 10,000 lb axles and 12" I beams and make sure they are at least 19# per ft. It's cheaper to get heavy dut to start with than to do it over. I hauled 2 super M's 1400 miles with no problem. and the braks on these axles will stop anything. My 2 cents. Bill

I have a 14000 lb 25 foot gooseneck trailor. I haul two super m"s (12,000lbs) or my 1206 (11,500lbs)with it all the time. My thoughts are that if you go with the 14000 lb gooseneck you will be fine. You start talking the 20000 lb and 24000 lb trailors they themselves weigh 5000 lbs. It will be easier on your truck and I think you reach your capacity of a pickup with the 14000 lb trailor. Pickup brakes are only so big. Any thing heavier could warrent a larger truck to be safe.

Your hemi will pull it fine. I pull with a duramax now but I had a ford with the 5.4 V8 and it did okay-just likes gas.

Good luck.

Cowman, IMO.. Do not get a light duty trailer! Yes it will work for what you have described. But, there will come a time when you will trade for a larger tractor or haul farther than the Lt. Duty trailer should. A heavier trailer will BE the better choice for a tractor or equipment. It can be placed more on the trailer and put just enough wt. on the truck to make it ride right. Thus making the best use of the truck you allready have, not making it necessary to trade trucks any time soon. A good 25 ft GN trailer with 2, 10,000lb axles, w/ a 5ft dovetail is a very good usuable length. trailer, if that is too long for your taste then a 20 or 24 with the dove tail might be a better fit.
Anyway... loose the idea if the Lt. Duty trailer, at some point you will be sorry. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.
PS.... Bigger and Heavier is BETTER!

The axles tell the story. With 2 7000 lb axles you can haul 14000 lbs that includes the weight of the trailer. I don't know what that trailer weighs. I pulled a Super H (4000+lbs) on a 14000 lb capacity bumper pull trailer that weighed 3000 lbs with my 92 GMC half ton (never again), lucky to still have my transmission, not to mention mine, my wife's and my dog's lives. I bet that trailer weighs 4000, if so a 10000 lb tractor is right on the line. I assume your hemi is a heavy duty version. There is more to towing than just the engine and transmission, as you know.

i think the trailer is fine for what you want, im assuming the dodge is a h/d 2500 at least? i have the cummins in mine and average 17 mpg with 16,000 lbs of trailer on the hiway, that hemi should have the power, but you might find it is thirsty ,i for one would like to know what kind of fuel economy you experience . i got 178000 miles on mine at the cost of 1 starter, and 1 tranny [ automatic] plus the normal mantenince items ericlb

I have a 25 ft. dovetail gooseneck with fold down ramps and helper springs. I carry a seperate center ramp for tri-cycle tractors. One large ramp is to heavy. It has the 12" beams and can haul 10,000 lbs easy or two tractors at one time. If you can, be sure to have brakes on all axles and use Goodyear Radials because they won't heat up. The only drawback I have is the height of my trailer but tractors load easy. It just gets hard on an old man when I have to climb up at the front or sides.

cowman,
i think you will be just fine. my neighbors have a 20' w/ two 7k axles. it is hauled all summer long by a 3/4ton chevy w/ a 350 and has two 560's on the trailer. they do a lot of tractor pulling and haul all over MN, SD and IA. the 560's are both diesel and narrow fronts. they back one on and then drive the second on. no problems. i have hauled my 706 w/ a cab, loader, loaded tires and weight on this same trailer and i also know that it has hauled 1206's, 1256's and 1456's. good luck

casey in SD

p.s.
should've bought a CUMMINS!!!!
